I'm a first year with 1400 hours under my belt, another 125 hours i'm heading to school for my first year of technicial training. I have a question on how you guys first started off. Right now i'm starting off doing underground civil work (running conduit, installing transformer bases, pulling wire, and etc.). I haven't played with anything energized (hot), done any terminating, or hell every climbed a pole. Reason being is that i work for a contractor not the city's electric company. Also would it be a good idea to move to another company to get as much experience as i can?

i'm also from calgary and work for another contractor. mostly outside the city work. i would not suggest switching companies yet (although it is totally up to you). well at least till you go to school the first year anyways. i have been told by other guys i work with that have been to school that the majority of the school is based on overhead and that is going over the 3 years of school. if you do change jobs becareful which company you go to. do look for a company that gives you chances to move up plus do other kinda work that is plt related.

If you have the chance to work for the city rather than a contractor then take it. You never know when that chance to wrok for the city will come around again. Besides working for the city is probably better than working for a contractor. Better pay, beter benefits, better everything.

I'm indentured apprentice. i should be attending technicial training around the same time as you are too.
