should a good grunt always carry besides normal accouterments, hard hat, gloves and safety glasses etc.?

Kleins, channel locks, and tape. And dont let me catch you without them or your gloves. My biggest pet peave is the waiting on a grunt to put his gloves on to give me something. First time is a warning, second time is the opportunity to work the rest of the day in your rubbers.:D

Agree with Daddy except I'll trade the Channel locks for a sharp knife. Meat!

I figured the knife was a given. If you got your pants on you ought to have a knife.

Well I'm gonna go with Meat. Channel locks would sure be next on my list though. I don't know how many damn knuckleheads I have asked. You carry a pocketknife don't you? Answer. No. Course any normal person in this trade always carries a pocket knife but I think normal ain't so common anymore.

I don't know how many I would say. Put an eye in that rope or such and they would either ask to borrow my knife or go get a skinning knife off someone's belt. Mercy.

Gotta go with Daddyof2! In my bubble a knife is just a given!

Heard it said once "a lineman without a knife is like a whore without a pussy"!

Lots of locals a groundman is not required to furnish hand tools, he is to assist a Journeyman Lineman.... so why a sharp knife if he skins wire he is working out of his classifaction.

Next question is what are the top 3 favorite things to throw at the grunt. I'll name 1. Ampact shells.:D

Im surprised to hear so many states still even have grunts to throw shit at. Lost ours years ago. Only had 1 thing thrown at me when I was a grunt in the late 70s. A #4 fargo. We hiked in to a pole to fix a broken primary jumper. My lineman hiked the pole and I was to send him up the fargo on the handline. Thought I would be a smart and dropped the fargo in his ditty bag as he started up the pole. He dropped the handline and called for the fargo. Yelled back "Har har har ....look in your bag you already got it" thinkin I was one smart sob. Yall, probeblycan figure out the rest of the story. He was a good shot.

My hammer! Oops, I guess that's what I threw at my foreman when I was an ape. The bonehead had me up a class 5 pole transferring a 300' span of 1/0 triplex to a new pole, old one was rotted. He thought it would be fun to take the down guy off before I had the triplex transferred. Needless to say, he left for lunch while I finished transferring the wire.:D

Worked with a guy once whose favorite thing to throw was anything sent up before he asked for it. Grunts only did it once.

Once another guy threw a #4 fargo at an old kid and it hit the hood of a truck and glanced up and struck him in the eye. Damaged his sight. He never filed any charges but I thought he should have. The pupil of his eye was sorta scattered. You could see it, as the pupil was distorted compared to the other eye. It's sorta a funny thing but I guess it shouldn't be done.

I used to have the habit of trying to get a ciggarette down the back of the shirt of anyone that has pi$$ed me off recently - only in the CBD or in winter when their is no fire danger. Keeps you amused while holding mains out in the bucket waiting for the new pole to come up. Or if its a hot day emptying the sweat out of your gloves when someone walks under they soon learn not to.

OK what's a AMPACT SHELL??
And any T/A worth his weight always has a roll of tape.

Ampact shells are the powder charges for AMPACT connectors. They kinda resemble yellow or blue shot gun shells with the primers installed in side and backwards. They make an nice little bang if thrown correctly or if they are accidently dropped. ;-)

The knive was always for cutting line or anything....but NEVER EVER JACKETED CABLE OR WIRE!!!!!!!!!!! Always kept it real for the trade.Wanna do what we do for a living...GET IN THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM!!! Most my grunts did and are now JOURNEYMAN LINEMAN workers. woody

agreed, kleins, channels, tape.

a foreman said to another JL(who is high and mighty) recently, "if you don't carry a knife you probably carry a purse"

when I was a 2nd or 3rd step app, I didn't loosen up the wingnuts far enough on an X100 sherman riley and the JL in the bucket let it fly. he missed me by a few inches. the foreman and the gf had a talk with him. some shit is funny, sweat, chewspit, cigs, ampacts, cardboard boxes for squeeze on's. but no heavy shit

You guys don't really do that do ya?:p Make your app. carry your tools?:p Oh....that's right, you're "union". Course not.

I never "carried" an apprentice. I taught him...My apprentice, was always someone I respected, for wanting to learn the Trade, and I taught him every chance I got. All the "simple" knowledge...my dumbass has....

As to the "Question".

A Knife in my pocket at all times. A big knife.
Aside from that, give me Channel locks and a pair of 9" kleins, and I can build or destroy the world.

I've heard....don't know if it's really true or not, but some outfits don't allow "Channel locks" on the job. "Breaks and degrades the galvanization on the nuts and bolts, there by...allowing rust to set in."

Did this thread get changed to apprentices instead of grunts? And Channel Locks (http://www.channellock.com/)is a brand name of a tool. Are you referring to side cutters or pump pliers? Drifter

Grunts and apes are the same in a rat outfit, I guess.

Why not? They're in the primary after a whopping 2 weeks experience.

Of course, I'm sure the ones trained by scabrat were the best anywhere at anytime!
