Anyone can nominate anyone for the bargaining committee. They are voted on by the union body. The top vote getters are on the committee. You can trust them. Its stupid to say just because they are on the company payroll they can't be trusted. Usually and alternate is chosen along with the committee. The President of the union is automatically on the committee.

Most of them are close to retirement or have gotten a job in management after the contract. I know of four who stuck it out and are still doing it.
Probably should not admit it but 4 years ago our e-board told us to accept the contract, keep our benefits the same and some other changes. We went for broke and thats exactly what we got "broke". Should have listened.
You have to have a really strong union to make progress on a contract. We had a bunch of people scared to death to strike, companies knows that and will eat you up and spit you out. Our company handed out a book called "High Velocity Culture Change" it basically spells out how to break a union. They told the managers they wanted them to live by it. Buy the book, read it, then you decide. I am sure you will find it very interesting.
