It depends, if it's my week of stand-by I'll make myself catch Z's, but if I just come in on a "next-up" or just take a night of somebodies stand-by I don't worry so much about staying rested.

I work for a muni, (8 mos. left in apprenticeship) if we work 16 straight we get 8 hrs. rest and our superintendent makes a judgment call if we are on stand-by and work most of the night, irregardless of 16 straight. We get the following workday off w/ paid company time, but only if we are pulling stand-by the following night.

I usually have no prob sleeping in these situations.......................

Grabbing 6 and going fishin' sounds good to me. :D

I'm pretty sure it's been tested that you can't make up for lost sleep, so if you miss it(the long stretch of time), you and your body won't feel you should make it up.

It's the losing some each night that can get you. What I mean is the couple of hours you might need each night over a length of time that will get ya. Not, one long stretch.

I read that some where, don't ask me do research Edge. :D

After a big problem I always had heck trying to sleep that first period off. But by the second one I could fall asleep on the way to the bed.
I averaged 3 hrs a nite for a month after Hurricane rita.......Some Nites I hadda decide would I rather eat or sleep?

All nighter's, I will work the next day, I save my OT that way.

Big storms, The first 24 is easy, it's workin through the next night is a little tougher, but when I see Mr. sunshine, I can keep on goin.

I got to stay busy, if I'm workin, no problem, If I stop, get a full belly, and get warm, sleep is hard to fight.

When I crash, I crash hard, I would like to be able to sleep, but the older I get, the more I gotta piss, so I can't sleep as long as I like to. Feel hung over for a couple day's, then back to normal.

I will tap out if I got somethin to do, or if I am goin in vaction or somethin.

I am like your sleep walkin dog, start fixin shit in my sleep.

The old lady stopped sleepin with me after storm's, I was pissed off one time at someone, I hadn't slept in a couple day's, she said I was talkin, then I just rose up and put my fist through the wall, good thing I didn't hit a stud.

Weird thing's happen when ya don't get sleep.

I'm a sleep camel! I can go days on end with minimal sleep, and it doesn't bother me. But I'll make up for it when things slow down, to the point where I can zonk out for a full day. My hardest time of keeping the eyelids in the open position is about the time the sun comes up, for about an hour.

When I'm working days and nights I go through a fatigued bit and then get a sort of second wind and can keep going. I'm fortunate in that I can sleep anywhere and at any time. Not so good when I'm driving! Some of my friends call me Narco as an abbreviation for Narcolepsy because I fall asleep so easily.

You NEED sleep. During your normal day your brain takes in information and stores it temporarily. It's during sleep that the days intake is filtered and the important bits are stored more permanently. That's why you often dream a mish-mash of the days thoughts. Without sleep you gradually get more and more abstract. Sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture.

One company I worked for did excessive hours that rolled from day to night to day to night with driving in between. I fell asleep at the wheel so often that I left that job. The pay was good, but the hazards just weren't worth it. Closest I came to killing myself electrically too.

Been on shift now for pushin 4 years. Back and forth from 12hr days to 12hr nights 7 to 7. The bod still aint got it figured out and probebly never will. Cant sleep worth a damn during the day specially if its nice outside but a dark room and bout 6 fingers of Jack does help.

Does it really though? It may make you "sleep" but it's not necessarily a good sleep.

I mentioned above about how the brain uses sleep time to filter through the days mental intake and store the important stuff in your brain. Alcohol may affect that process adversely.

We're not all as lucky as 6121202. Unfrotunatly that doesn't work when out of town hell sometimes it doesn't even work at home.

I'll sleep/rest if possible, even cat naps. It takes a day or two for me to get turned back around after working throughout the night. Just finished a weekend of storm work and finished @ 4am, slept till noon and just got up. Feel ok, but know I'll crash tonight and feel good early tomorrow. When I push it from stress and stay awake then I start feeling "hungover" without ever drinking. It's said a body needs a 1 1/2 hr. period to get in and out of rem state and a healthy person needs at least 4 rem periods a night. I know the military and commercial fishermen realize this. Anyway, given the chance I'll sleep.

If I make it through the first 24 hrs without a nap... I'm good for another 12....

but don't get in my way when I head for the pillow...

We have frequent scheduled outages for 12 am to 5 am. We normally work our regular 8 and then have 8 off and back for midnight. I don't normally sleep before and only sleep a minimal amount after, so I can get my normal sleep routine the next night. Otherwise you are screwed up for days.
