Stories of the unbelievable stuff that really happens out there.
When I started the Trouble Shooter forum this way, my idea was that a person could post their trouble calls here and not let people pick it apart with replies about how they would have done it. So, maybe I ought to re-word the explanation of this forum to say that this is a forum where you can...

Don’t pee here! I was the on shift afternoon troubleshooter when I got a call after 900 pm that a customer’s dog got a shock from peeing on a street light pole. When I got there I found a cement street light pole with a decorative harp fixture. I got out my Fluke tester and I installed a screw...
Years ago while working nights running a urd radar van I was sent to help another one man truck. The only thing I knew was that the guy that needed help was pulling a double shift and he already worked one.We called the guy Giz...a sorta lazy type of guy that really got away with things that me or...
How many times have you seen a lineman go out to a trouble call that is called in as a part service and leave it as a part service but still making the customer happy? You know like finding a bad urd leg and switching the legs in the meter can to get on what the customer wants on.Or going on a part...
Have you ever seen or been on a call when a customer thats not affected turns out to be affected worse than the customer that did call in?Well I have..kind of.. although its been awhile ago, heres what happened.Back then lots of Jys. would be running a tuck alone.I was one of them, that day we had...
Man that is one ugly picture. Reminds me of colonoscopy view!
I kind of feel for you, although your pay must be good. Being overhead is where its at,I wouldnt trade for anything.Being underground in the manholes must get old,not much riding time. With most of us we actually meet the customers affected by all types of outages, their family, kids, maybe a little...
Worst night in a while. So, I get called in at 2200 last night to go out and relive crews on a trouble job. I had to splice a 1/0 three conductor lead to tri-plex 350 on a network feeder in the city. Well we get out to the site I take one look in the hole and know its gonna be a long night....
Had an instance years ago where there was a bad crossarm...half of it was more or less floating in the breeze. The whole service center knew about it and it was just a matter of time before it went south...Well we all waited and it never did ,so that night around 12 midnight we happened to notice it...
A few years back I was running a one man truck, but that day another one man was with me,cant remember why,he might have been on light duty, but whatever. We were called to check out a low wire or something,as we got there the customer met us and takes us around to his back yard.I dont know why,but I...
Had one years ago when I worked as a one man ,old part of town called Pasadena, everything was hard to locate from the start, including the address.Nobody answered the door and there was # 4 alumin. feeding this one room house,it might have had two rooms, hell I still dont know.I followed the drops...
Lets say your sent on a call.you arrive and find someone else already there,he briefs you as to what he has found, and heads off on another call,do you go from there or do you start from the beginning? I learned the hard way, thats why I start from the beginning...you know what I mean dont you?:D
One thing about trouble calls is that you really dont know what you will see next,or where you may be sent next.....I remember one call that was in a strip center....I think it was a laundromat or something....well right next door was one of those massage places, you know what Im talking...
Had an outage call today in a small rural town that we serve, pull up to the place, the trans fuse is blown so i go on the usual dead squirrel hunt, as i am searching around the pole for a possible culprit the good ol boy comes over and says "you ain't gunna find him, he is in my sink allready...
Ever had a temporary disconnect that goes something like this....you arrive, and a carpenter, ect wants you to disconnect the service, for you older guys the answer is yes, thats where Im going with this one....you jump the fence and open the urd transformer that was hard to get to in the first...
Got some pictures and a story of what we got called to on FRIDAY (as it always happens). Some guys working in the nearby Sub yard (132kv-66Kv) watched this all going on and would love to see the footage taken. What was found was the center phase polymer insulator had failed resulting in it flashing...
You make a good point and it can be done with a good system and communications, here in the summer, people could care a less about their lights, when we offer to run a bypass there are tricks involved in how you offer it..........some will try to encourage the customer not to have one installed to get...
If you test at the pedistal or Transformer on this run you can have 120/120/240 but you know you have 120/120/0 at the meter or entrance. At the source test the amp draw one leg will have load (total load) and the other will have a zero (very low) reading. Then at the entrance you can do the same...
Once there were 3 -1 man trucks going to the same call...it was already dark, and i believe the other two guys were sent on this call to run a sec.bypass cable..must have been a slow night or something cause I showed up also.......here we dont fix the bad urd that same day, that would cost way too...
