The company we used, Powerline Supply, in Michigan, created a unique ID for each employee. They created a stamp that went on the gloves and sleeves. We were able to track them that way.

Rob, what part of Ontario are you located? I have a camp in Iron Bridge, 72 miles East of Sault Ste. Marie. I saw as many wolves up there this year as deer and never saw a buck.

I think I'm keeping the priority pretty focused.
This is a carving I did a few years ago, don't know if I ever shared it. It's supposed to be an apprentice on his first pole. He's cut out and bearhugging the pole.
There doesn't seem to be much animosity here with the union/mngt in this area, because of the lack of journeymen. As hard as it is to get qualified people, companies tend to play nice when everyone...
I haven't been on the site for a while. Good to see the old gang still here. I retired in April, but it looks like I may be doing some safety work part time in the Spring. Been getting to do more...
Got no idea on hours I have into it Greg. I got the idea from a picture I saw, it is actually a tattoo design from Ireland. I mostly used chisels on this piece. I bought the wood on a trip through...
I'm putting together a program for several other co-ops to use focusing on those in the field. At my co-op, we have bird dogs, guides, and wire watchers. A bird dog is a "competent person". In...
I made this for my wife. She thinks it's the best thing I've done.

It's 4th of July all over the world. Independence Day to those who know why.
Happy 5th of July!
We had a fatality in our state years ago when a lineman who was to patrol transmission lines walked into the rear rotor with his hood over his head, leaning into the wind.
We had -7 F yesterday morning. Clear up to 7 above now.
Same to you! Stay warm, stay safe!

I think the ugliness ruined it for a bunch of guys. I was called in the middle of the night once because one of the former zealots figured out how to get my home phone number. That caused concern for...
It saddens and concerns me that more and more leadership in utilities is someone other than linemen. Part of it is the pay for those positions as compared to linemen, the other is guys who want no...
Thanks, the most time-consuming thing I've carved.
I carved this fella out of a chestnut tree we took down to build a new 3-phase line.
We have struggled to hire journeymen, although we did just hire one from the local municipal. The big IOU in Michigan will be at $50.00 an hour within two years so there are a few chasing the $$$. We...
With your background you seem to be a great fit for that apprenticeship. OSHA had made the changes in climbing tools, not companies. Think about it, OSHA says the company has to provide the...
Union linemen in Michigan are working, if there is not an issue with them.
Rob,
There is no "High Voltage Certification" from NLC that I know of. We hire these graduates as apprentices.
If you are a lineman that cannot get a job, there is a damn good reason.
We have hired 2 graduates from NLC. I've visited several programs and theirs is top-notch. The president of the college visited our co-op this past summer and checked in on his graduates.
For us...
My college background is in business. But what has served me best is being focused on the member. I have worked in the co-op world over 36 years. Too many utilities focus on engineering, in my...
