Typically when companys offer these large sums usally a damn good reason why. So if any one out there has some info i would like to hear what kind of company they are to work for. I go out next week for a job interveiw and to take their test and see what exactly they offer. Any info would be a help.
I just read the one that was just issued by FP&L and was an insert in my latest issue of Powerlineman Mag. They are offering a 5,000 Sign-on bonus for qualified electrical line specialists. http://www.FPLCareers.com
Makes you wonder if there is a catch. I know in Jersey with the wave of retiring Linehands theres not a whole bunch of intermediate boys to take their places. Positions are opening up all the time as well.

It all depends on how close you want to live to san diego on how much the cost of living is. I don't really know how much overtime they get but they do alright. you should check out edison to if your considering moving out here they work alot of overtime. or theres always outside construction and theres alot of work everywhere it pretty easy to get a san diego call if thats were you want to work

Thanks West Coast. I'm only asking because we had a few lineman a few years back go to California and they didn't like it at all. most of them came back home. Some said the work practices were unsafe but wouldn't specifiy. I think they went to work for LADWP and PGE. So I'm not looking into any of those. Edison what do the lineman there average a year. I don't want to move out there and end up having to come back because the money isn't there. and the cost of living is out of this world. Where I work at now the lineman make 37 hr and in SDGE they are starting me at 40.84hr. I'm just looking to move to a much nicer area and work where the climate is favorable. Getting tired of working in the cold. Who do you work for? OH yeah all ot at SDGE is Double time is that what most utilities do out west.

that sounds good. What type of system is it Wye or Delta? Also How much climbing do they do. We climb about 2 time a week. Not to bad though. I just have to get the old lady to buy into it. We have no one out there. So family is an issue, but my company sucks bad.

hey dude,,,i started this post a while back, had lots of questions and didnt get many answers, alot of second hand info and hear-says. I came out,did my interveiw, did my test, got offered a job. Im setting here in a hotel right now, second trip here to do a mandatory house hunting trip. Let me say a few things because ive been there done that......they wont offer 20k, they offer 15 for a sign on bonus, split into 3 payments with taxes with held, works out to 9k cash,4k on first paycheck,1k after gloving school,4k after you complete 6 months probation period. They do alot of climbing out here because so much shit is private property, most is 25kv and 98% is delta. The guys here thats been here a while are LINEMAN,they work on this shit and survive. Its close to Detroits mess as far as pole specs minus the banking of transformers. You are willing to work, learn their system, your earning potential is very high, close to 200k a yr. I went to metro a few days ago and talked to manager and decided thats where i want to work, most ot their and seems like a likable place,so i start Oct 1. They put you up for 30 days so it gives u time to find a place. Expect to pay min 800 month for a small apt,1200 gets ya something nicer, maybe even 2 bedroom. But,where money is to be mad, money is to be spent. Its a yr commentment so ill start my yr in a few weeks and approrch it as i have 15 yrs to go....wish me luck and luck is what i wish to you,i will keep ya informed as i learn myself.

Actually, It will be 5000 your first full pay check and 4000 after your 6 mos.. Climbing is not as much as you may think and if you are going Metro to you will mostly be doing underground. Good luck, have fun and look out for your self.

Still sounds good though. I'll try to push the bonus just to see what I can get. The HR person wouldn't tell me how much just that it was good and negotiable. My biggest issue is my lady. She is really not liking the fact that we are moving so far from family. Let me know how you like it out there. As far as climbing goes I really don't think i'm worried about that. It's part of the job. Just hope its not everyday. a few times a week no problem. lol
