Seems there has been quite an influx of accidents particularly since restoration efforts began! Everyone PLEASE work safe!
A fellow Journeyman at a sister Co-op (BARC) made contact with primary Friday.
I believe the lineman's name is Phil Jarvis... some of you rodeo guys might know him as he frequented those events regularly...
from what we have been told the accident is still under investigation... but that there was a 3phase pole with some braces broken or rotted out that had given way and allowed the arm to go vertical... the Mr. Jarvis climbed the pole and his pole buddy was in the bucket controlling the arm... something gave way in the rigging or something not sure of those details but it alloed the arm to flip back around and the phase on Mr. Jarvis' side contacted him on the neck/shoulder above his sleeves and exited out his knee...
from what I understand the line was NOT in one shot or HOT LINE TAG!
regardless of who when or what ever the man is in critical condition at a local Burn unit... (I thinking UVA not sure about that though) and I beleive he has already lost (amputation) his leg...
Our thoughts and prayers are with him,

more information per the B.A.R.C webpage
On Friday September 19th Phil Jarvis, a BARC Lineman and 12 year employee, came into contact with a line carrying 7200 volts and was seriously injured. He was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital after being tended to by the Dunlap Volunteer Rescue Squad. After approximately two hours of surgery in Roanoke he was flown to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond where they removed his left leg just above the knee. Several more hours of surgery took place. He has multiple burns across his body including his back, neck and right leg.
The good news received on the 24th is that Phil is sitting up talking with visitors and his wife Tricia. He is expected to make a full recovery and possibly be moved closer to home within the next couple of weeks to start rehab. He is in good spirits and has concern for all of his family, friends and coworkers in his heart.
There will be multiple fund raisers happening over the next few weeks and beyond to help with the "extra" expenses associated with an accident such as this.
To make a contribution please send a check to:

Thanks for your concern and please keep Phil, Tricia and their three boys Pj, Wes and Colby in your thoughts and prayers.
you guys be safe out there!

Christ almighty...I hate hearing **** like this. I know this is going to sound like an echo of everyone elses thoughts across this board, but come on! Get your tags! Get your one shots! This job is dangerous enough when its done right, let alone when corners are cut!!!![]()
Thats just asking for it... **** stupid approach to an easy fix. Must be all that union training.
It's hard to tell just what happened.... but why would you put yourself in that situation???
I'll tell you... no fu$$in experience.
Well they both just went through the school of hard knocks.... and one got a circle 65 because he was in the bucket and the other one is flunked out... for good. Stupid stupid stupid.
Sad to hear it...but Stupid is as Stupid does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
phill was a good lineman, all four braces were broke phill climbed that pole and put new braces on one side while the guy in the bucket pulled the arm down, the guy in the bucket could barly reach the arm, he put on 2 braces and drove in the hard head in on that side, 2 braces are holding the arms, we all have done that!! phill went around the pole to put the braces on the other side when the new braces gave way. this was accident and may or may not have been prevented, but they happen, thats the kind of work we are in. there are a million diffrent was to do line work, the same could have happend to anyone of us, every lineman i work with including myself that knew phill are sad. so watch that stuiped is as stuiped does ****, even the best make mistakes, and everybody has something happen to them in this life that was out of there control, could have happend to you 639 and the line was on one shot

A rope safety tied on the hold down side of the arm would have been good. Tie it off to the butt of the pole or framework of the truck. Heavy duty braces? Must have been two phases on one side of the arms and one on the other. If large wire then pretty good imbalance on one side. What size was the wire?
It is easy for all of us to sit here and Monday morning quaterback what happened to the fellow brother's. We all know that there was mistakes made and we should all learn from it so it never happens again, afterall the guys who claim they never make mistakes are the one's who **** up the most.
