Oh if we only could have a strict discipline regime. Hey! Maybe we will get it before long! Now, I wonder how long that would fly in this PC environment? Ummmm....???

When you compare the USA to some of those countries, you ask for another whole can of worms.

We have our problems and Loner pretty much said what they were-----in a nutshell.

Default My ex was a teacher

taught for 33 years in public schools. You would not believe some of the stories. Here in La. its always the first thing that gets cut in funding. Has been since Eddie Edwards back in the early 70s and still is to this day. But its not just the funding that is the problem. As touched on. ya cant teach in kaos, the inmates rule the assylum ! And the teachers hands are tied.

I'm not an old man, yet I still recall the shame of being sent to the principal's office, or the fear of God if a letter got sent home because I acted up in school. I never got a letter, but let's just say I recall what 'Ol Mr. Donnely's desk looked like.

Teachers should be allowed to take back the schools, and the parents of miscreants should be brought up on charges if their kid is a repeat offender. My hats off to teachers. I wouldn't want their job, even with summers off.

Dave, I know how important you like us to stay on topic, but I really don't want to start another thread about education. Just let me say it in one post and be done.

Education is only ONE of America's problems, and if you all would think about it, it's only become a huge problem due to family standards. Family standards have changed over the last 30 to 20 yrs. Now, that's what I see as the overall problem. Huh? You say. Well, you might be taking care of business, but there are many that aren't. And most of those are single parents or guardians to these students today.

This is what I see our problems being and it affects what we do....like testing. I know Beaver threw in that link to show us how the education system sucks, but please understand that we, the educational system, is an institution. And we are governed by YOUR government and state.

Here are the problems---besides the #1 that I mentioned above saying WAS our problem as a society.

    1.discipline
    2.attendance
    3.no parent involvemnt

Without the 3rd one, there wouldn't be the first two, IMHO. Did you go to school? Did your parents let you miss school? Did they know you were at home and not attending school?

Were you so much of a discipline problem that you didn't finish? If you were, did you spend most of your time in ISS(In-school-suspension) or OSS (out-of-school suspension)...or were you expelled from school? If you spent too much time doing all of those, most likely you didn't attend much school.

Did you have two parents? Did you have one that cared enough to make sure you attended school? Did you tell your parents what to do and what not to do? Did you have respect for your parents? Did they care enough about you to set down some guidelines or some discipline? Did you know right from wrong? Did you care if you did something wrong?

Our district is the #1 dropout rate in the State of Florida. Actually it is two schools in our district that is facing the #1 dropout rate for the state. There are two high schools in our district so we must share the rate. We made headlines. How embarrassing is that?

But, what didn't make the news is this, we were the only school in the district to make an "A" last year (2007-2008). It's not just the institution (public schools) that are our problem. Take away the shortage of funding(that's bad enough), take away our teachers (that's not solving anything), and demand higher standards and what would you get?

    1. larger class size
    2. more discipline
    3. more truancies
    4. no parent involvement

Higher standards? Paleeze! You just LOWERED the standards by cutting out the heart!

And listen, I've not even covered the administrational level! We have more administrators at our county level than what we NEED at the school level! They keep cutting at teacher and staff levels! Sound familiar guys??? Ever looked at a pryamid? Well, turn it upside down and you have our AMERICAN problem!

Discipline and parental involvement in kid's lives are definitely both lacking. I did very well in school, because I was scared sh!tless of facing my parents if I screwed up.

Like you said Swamp, (Christ I shiver a little each time I agree with ya ) most of these little bastards running around aren't scared of anything!

They did a survey in the 70's and then repeated it a couple years back. The question they asked elementary aged kids was "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

In the 70's the answers varied between firemen, policemen and doctors.

Recently the majority of answers were just "Rich".

I think the role models our kids pick these days play a large part in their issues as well. People raised so much hell about Michael Phelps taking a bong hit, crying about how "He's a role model!" I think that if you look at an athlete as your role model you get what you deserve. Why the hell aren't doctors, teachers and engineers role models?

Damn kids. Now I'm feeling old

That article sums it up pretty well. Did they ever release the bill online? Did any politicians get a chance to read it yet? Can average citizens get a copy?

Pardon my language, but I guess it's appropriate to call this tax bill "stimulation" because we're all getting jerked off.

Boxer Seeks to Ratify U.N. Treaty That May Erode U.S. Rights

Sen. Barbara Boxer is pushing the Obama administration to move forward with ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a controversial treaty that has never gained much support in the U.S.

Sen. Barbara Boxer is urging the U.S. to ratify a United Nations measure meant to expand the rights of children, a move critics are calling a gross assault on parental rights that could rob the U.S. of sovereignty.

The California Democrat is pushing the Obama administration to review the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a nearly 20-year-old international agreement that has been foundering on American shores since it was signed by the Clinton administration in 1995 but never ratified.
No problem, my man. This is the Nancy Pelosi Hall of Shame. Of course we have a spot on the wall for Barbara Boxer. You feel free to nominate anyone you like.
