Just wondering what everyone is doing with their kellum grips? Do you use the Punch-Lok clamps on them or just tape them up? If there is a chance that significant reversing may happen we want them clamped, or if 2 grips are being used end to end. Under normal pulling operations we just install the grip properly and tape the tail end good- at least 4 to 6 inches. Any thoughts/

well in Hydro One we go about it 2 ways. We sometimes use a banding tool banding 2 bands on the end, and one at the top. Another method we found worked good is using hose clamps, and doing it the same way you would with the banding tool (2 clams on the end and one at the top). Depening on the size of it, sometimes hose clamps wont work, so you may need to use a banding tool. Either case, when we do put on bands or hose clamps we tape the **** out of the ends, and the top. Hope this helps
We live in a society of victimization, where people are much more comfortable being victimized than actually standing up for themselves

If you put a clamp at the top of the grip, you are defeating the whole design, they are the same as a half hitch, the higher the tension the better they grip. I can see using a clamp at the end incase they start to slip, but you NEVER clamp at the front of the grip, or half hitch.

I've seen "apes" and " JL'S" tie a square knot in front of there half hitches. That is absolutely WRONG.

i've never had a kellum slip in my life. we use a little tape on the tail, but that's just to transition from the bare conducter to the PE. it slides through the sliders easier.

    it's the truth...

you might get by with it on some little wire but you pull some big **** on high tension and it's gonna bite your ass...

We always put a clamp on the end & tape over it. The largest wire I have ever handled is 556 & we have never had a problem & have done a lot of tension stringing

We use hose clamps too. It gets placed at the bottom of the grip, never had an issue while stringing.

    Front end or back end?
If you put a clamp on the front of a kellum/ grip you are impeeding the gripping action.
tape or a clamp anchoring the back of the grip is fine. And recommended if you have to pull back/ rewind.

    Default Banding Kellam grips

The manufacturer of this style of pulling sock recommends installing a punch lok band on the end. Some say two but I've never used two and never had a problem. Taping over the band is a personal preference and is not necessary.
Just taping isn't a recommended procedure.
Some linemen tape the leading end and this should never be done, banding the leading edge will totally defeat the Chinese finger action of the grip and could be the source of a total failure.

Just to try & make things a little muddier we attach a swivel at the front end of the horsexxxx & clamp the back end only.
