Union Dues to sign the out of work books?

I was going to sign the out of work books at my local and they are saying just to sign the books (book 3 instead of 4) it costs $300 in union dues for six months. Has anyone done this? I don't mind paying the dues but paying money to "maybe" get a job seems a little sketchy. I don't want to be sitting on the books for 3 or 4 periods waiting for work and be out a grand before ever working a day. Thoughts?

Climbing cert.
NCCO crane cert.
Class A
First aid/CPR
Associates degree
Veteran
Eagle Scout
I even have a helicopters license

With all the Hiline going on in SoCal you won't sit long with a crane cert. You sign operator or grunt book?

Signed grunt books. Crane cert isn't even looked at on those books

I didn't know that. I thought they only make you pay dues if you got a job. You'll probably have no issue finding work with all your skills.

Yea, I thought you only paid dues once you started working also. I'm going to meet with them and get more details. I'll update. I think if you have no cert. you can sign book 4 and not pay dues. But it's a long shot. Most locals never pull off of book 4
