Well said Birdog! If we stay the same, we're going backward!
I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce.

I've been at it over 20 years. Some of the things I was taught would scare you, it scares me sometimes. This trade is always changing, whether it be new material, new rules, or just new and likely improved work procedures. We as lineman need constant updating, although we don't normally get it. Some older guys continue to teach young guys bad habits. I had a young guy cut a primary neutral when I wasn't watching, nothing happened, thank God, except for me giving him particular s***. Scary part was he was a 4th year and should have known better. He didn't, and refused to understand when I tried to explain it to him. I had no choice but to make the rule to jumper a neutral before you cut it, no exceptions. He eventually complained to my boss that I wouldn't let him di things his way.

Scary thought,at least you stood up for what was right.I had similar experiences only on a weekly basis. How about this one.As the lineman I tried to change,he was rubber gloving and dead ending a hot phase. He needed to turn the shoe to accommodate the buck arm down below so while he had a hold of the tail on the phase he stuck his screw driver in the eye nut attached to pole and tried turning it down while holding the phase.I simply told him hey I'm not trying to be a know it all but ya can't touch a phase and a ground at the same time.....He looked at me and said why there's a bell in the line. Now this guy has been doing line work for 8 years. He got upset that I told him he was testing his gloves.(newer pole now mind ya and a ground running down it also).Well he then bumped the pole with the tail drew an arch. Then I was concerned and told him to fuzz the line and see if its hot because ya may have tripped the breaker.Lucky for him we were not working by a sub.We were towards the end of the line. This all took place while the foreman, the competent person on the ground was watching.I went down when we finally were done and asked him if he seen what happened and he said no.I told him we needed to fill out a near miss and he said no we don't.Ya I lost that one too.Along with my job,and 2 so called journeyman lineman that lacked some serious training.
