Stripped a bit of the scrap centre phase wire today.... Just wanted to have a look inside the wire at the fibre optic central core.

Turns out there are 16 strands of fibre inside the core of the wire. They are inside an aluminium tube within the central core of the conductor ... I don't know how many " giggle bytes" that would provide...?????? I hope it's worth all the extra effort it takes to install compared to "normal wire"

Never ceases to amaze me how small that stuff is but equally how much they can get down it.

Noticed a team of balfour guys today wrapping fibre on existing spans of UKPN network near Chelmsford. If they are still at it tomorrow I'll stop and get some pics.

I'm sure you know Bren, but don't get any shards of fibre in your skin, it's not good for ya.

I spent years wrapping on the earth wire.... It's a tough job. :(. Did all over the uk on the grids network.. I also did most of Northern Ireland The weirdest job we ever did was in Sweden..
The line gang turned up with a trailer full of straw bales. ??????? Wtf..
We soon found out what they were for... In the area we were working the towers ( pylons ) were covered in wasps nests... Before climbing ya had to light a bale and let the smoke pass iffy the wasps.. So the wasp stings kinda took the edge off the fibre optic splinters. :D

The data capability of each fibre depends on how well it survives being installed and the accuracy of the termination. A good fibre can pass phenomenal amounts of data.

Several channels of data can be transmitted at different wavelengths (colours of light) simultaneously and the data capability can be Petabits which is millions of giggle bits.
