Your arrive on an urd loop, get a urd switching order....it should mention to check the switching pot for one primary open & tag....do you actually go to that transformer and check and tag,or since your positive that your half is de-energized do you go looking for the fault location....?....then after fixing the problem do you go back and remove that tag.....everybody will say yes....Sure we all do.:D

I don't know how you found a fault on URD where you are, but we would have to at least rectify the cable which means putting voltage on the defective cable to prove it was faulted. then we might have to thump the cable so we could find where to dig. We may use radar to make a pretty good guess how far the open is from our test point. In any case we would need to isolate the cable on both ends with tags and test cards to do these operations, so we'd need to open at both ends, install tags, test the cable de-energized then install grounds to start. Then whoever was doing the testing either a troubleshooter or our cable test crews depending on the test, would take the clearance on that piece of cable and only they could be on that clearance while the test was being preformed. Once we found the fault we have the grounds reinstalled and the testers taken off the clearance so others could work on that piece safely. Not sure why you would assume the cable was dead, or protected for you to work on without a clearance. I understand in some areas crews or trouble have more control of what they are doing on any piece of cable, but we like to have a central control center in charge of the system. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Thats interesting T....Never heard of getting a urd clearance here, never heard of a test card....no testing the cabele here, yea you can buzz it if its a livefront but thats about it.When we have many loops out at the same time the vans are tied up,so its done the old way,by searching transformer by transformer...some guys will wait for the van, although it might take hours.

If you have a bad tub that's one thing, but if the cable is faulted and you need to find the fault to make the repair, how do you find the fault? Our system is a big percent loops so we can bridge out the bad section and still keep the customers in service. We also use FTI's to help locate the fault in which span of cable. But we still need to find the fault and dig it up to make the repair, and that calls for clearance and grounds before that section of cable is given to a crew. It's easy when a digger strikes a cable, or a customer sets a fence post in a cable, but when a cable goes bad on its own, there is some searching involved and we do that under a clearance.

All of what you said is true,,now days a younger guy isnt going to do it the old way....but it can be done....all it takes is some experience, lots of walking....lots of re-fuseing,lots of going back and forth :nightmare:

We always check the open point for our visual disconnect. Depending on the situation after walking it out we can isolate and re-fuse or put a megger on each leg to test the insulationif nothing is found we can either meg or ttr the xfmr(s).

Dont you love it when you find that the open point at the address that the dispatchers sent you is closed. And you have to find the open point on your own.Or when a span has been bad for a year or two and the ball gets dropped.....Opps.....who forgot to repair this span....now we have two bad spans :nightmare:

Yea like last week the cable was bad on the x primary leading to the open point so someone stood it off to isolate it and made the loop back hot and it was never fixed.

De-energized,where you from? Some people say parked, some say stand -off.....all the same thing...just wondering if its a north and south thing.
