Hey I got a question for you guys. Used to work as a laborer for a contractor. I when I was taught how to clean a hotstick, some jmen and apprentices told me that the stick is clean enough when you held your bare arm under the stick and the hair stood up due to static.
Now I work for a utility and ive asked a couple journeymen about this and they all never heard of it before. Is the "hair test" true or was I just BS'd?

The hair on my arms would stand up when ever my mother in law walked in the room but I wouldn't use her for a hotstick. All BS aside there are specific rules and recommendations by the manufacturer and the govt. learn them and follow the rules not some silly arse myth. Thirty five years ago a couple guys from A B Chance spent a few days with us and spent almost a whole day just on the construction, care of and repair of the sticks one of the best training sessions I've had. Are you aware that besides the cleaning for everyday use that OHSA requires an electrical test and certification every two years to the day, our company didn't think it was important, it cost them $15,000 the first time and they seem to have got the message. The important thing is it's you or one of your buddies life so learn to take care of your tools.

We tested and put the date on our sticks. We used what we called a suitcase tester. Cleaned the stick, made it damp and moved the tester over the stick which would pass or fail the stick. If it failed we cleaned it again, then another test. If it failed again the stick was shipped to out construction shop and they refurbished the sticks they could and sawed up the ones they couldnt.
