What, if any, guidelines does your company follow for allowing tree trimming crews to have reclosers in "one shot"?

Do they allow them to ask for circuits to be opened in emergency situations? Just seeing what the norm is.

Umm they allow the tree trimming birddog to get a delay tag in his name and he releases it when the trimmers are finished with their work

Ive never heard of such a thing. Its not a bad idea though. We were trained that the one shot was there to protect the equipment,so does that mean they might be trained that it would protect the trees.....no actually this is the first time I heard that question.A one shot might be possible here....if the company would listen.....now taking out a circuit is another, that is hard enough for a lineman to do....here.And if that circuit was in the Galleria area.....the answer would be a million no's

Doesn't happen here. But I would think if it were requested they'd do it.

Our forestry crews do all of there tree trimming under hold off protection. As far as dumping a circuit for them, if it is an emergency and the line crew agrees that is the way to do it then we would drop it for them.

Here getting a one shot and getting a clearance differ a bit.On a one shot/work tag on a circuit anyone can get it released.Could be an apprentice, even a helper. That is one part that still is used on the radio cause most other types of work is done on the computer. Now getting a clearance has always been different. The person who gets the clearance has to be the same person that releases the clearance.Does anyone also have it done that way?

Oh yeah clearances can only be given or released over the phone Too many people can hear one given over the radio and a stinker mite wud release it without gettin in touch with the affected parties

Thats interesting Poot...by phone only....Its been a long time since Ive been involved in getting /releasing a clearance. We could do it by radio....last time I checked /remember ..we didnt have cell phones back in the 80s.Anyway ,on a clearance you had to give your location, such as the amount of spans away from the nearest pole top switches, how many sets of grounds, how many people involved/ect.Maybe now they are done by phone, good idea.

The procedure for giving and recieving a clearance was always a four part conversation the requester would ask for the clearance on a section of line or piece of equipment the dispatcher would repeat the request then the dispatcher would tell the requester what was done to get the clearance, the requester would repeat it and if OK the dispatcher would issue clearance with Number again repeated while may seem long and drawn out a lot of times discrepancies were found if not by the people involved, but by people that had first hand knowledge of the area. That is why the radio was always the first line of communication, then the phone, it made everyone in the area aware of what was going on not just the two people having the conversations.

When getting a clearance we are now into a work protection code, which I am sure varys form utility to utility in some paces. for us 90% of our province use the same code.
No matter what I would think it should be aplication on paper or e-mail. Then there should be a paper trail stating what was asked for, a switching order to give you the clearance you want, a list of the people who are on the clearance and when they get off of the clearnce and finally a switching order to return to normal.
these are all legal documents to cover aeveryone in case something goes wrong.

In an emergency we follow the same procedure only it is applied for over the radio or phone, but all the same paper work is used.

Umm they call it echo protocol everthang gets repeated back n forth tween the dispather and the person being granted the clearance from just where they are workin and what switches or breakers they are workin between rite down to the number of men covered under the clearance and the number of grounds to be used, PLACEMENT OF grounds isnt covered however I spoze thats best left to the guys doin the work,

We also do that echo protocol with urd switching orders without the #of men involved.Depending on the situation some can be rather long.Ive known guys that were good get hung up on that part of this job....you gotta have your ducks in a row.

Lets go back to the circuit one shot conversation.I have never seen or had a problem with getting the one shot.Saying that, do you think that some of the higher ups in the company have circuits in mind that need to be avoided at all cost ,when it comes to a one shot?I think so here, politics involved...why not? :(

At the company I work for everything is done over the radio, no clearance's and no breakers in one shot over the phone everything is done where others can hear, and I like it that way.
