This is from another board in which I visit from time to time. We were talking about how her truck driving husband is always gone. I told her about the time the boss was gone and raising our kids seemed tough at times, but we made it. I asked her if I could post it here and she gave me permission. I thought some of you guys and gals here might relate a bit to this. Especially those lineman tramps. ;-)
Taillights in the Distance
It happens every time
And yet I try my best not to show
Just how much it hurts
To stand and watch him go
I start to dream of headlights
and a growling diesel exhaust
I wave and smile as you pull away,
but in my mind I’m lost
I know to just “go on”
is the path of least resistance
But my mind won’t let me,
for when I close my eyes I see
Taillights in the distance
Multiple lights of amber and red,
give such an ominous glow
As I watch them slowly fade,
as down the road you go
All to soon the glow is gone,
and I am again alone
To raise our kids and do the things,
to keep our house a home
trying not to think about
Taillights in the distance
The nightly calls come fewer
the longer you are gone
Which usually means you’re running hard,
chasing the next days dawn
The sooner you unload,
the sooner you turn around
To chase the night and the black ribbon highway,
homeward bound
This is when you never seem to understand,
I’d rather you be late
Than trying to hard to make the turn,
ever tempting fate
And I wait,
for headlights in the distance
The call it comes,
the ring truly changes tone
When I know it’s you
and you’re on your way back home
I prep the kids and inspect the house,
plan you favorite meal
I still don’t why it is,
but like a kid is how I feel
And in the front room, curtains split
I sit and blankly stare
At the spot in front of the house
where you will soon appear
In the distance the rumble starts,
soft but true as thunder
The diesel strains as it crawls along
with the load that it is under
I jump and run out the door
ever short of patience
And stare down the darkened road,
for headlights in the distance
The last turn comes with the amber glow,
I so longingly waited for
And up the last hill you slowly climb,
with an ever thunderous roar
What it is that makes you this way,
that you always need to roam
Is all forgotten as the lights go dark,
and you’re finally safe at home
In my arms or at my side,
neither is insistent
As long as we have time before again I see
Taillights in the distance
