In El Salvador after the war they made glass top tables using M-16's for the table legs. Everyone on project that worked on the Perquin line got one but me! I saw one and said I'd like mine made with AK47 parts. Alas it could not be done so mine never was made. :( The others got tables with the glass engraved thanking us for our work. Perquin was the rebel capital durring the war. We went in shortly after peace and using scavanged materials, built a system in the plaza for street lights. At that time it ran on a small gas genset. We did this over a long thanksgiving weekend on our own time.

Later we created a co-operative there. The power companies wanted nothing to do with the area. I staked the 46kv line from Joquitique to just outside of Perquin then a 23kv line into town. I also staked lines into 3 other towns in the area. We assisted in the construction and when I left they had several hudered consumers. I heard that a few years later the load got good enough that the bigger company in San Miguel pulled some strings and took them over. The co-op is a billing company now but are working on getting thier lines back.

I had to look it (genset) up..

So, was the genset large? I'm trying to visualize how many street lights for a plaza. Sorry, I'm onhands and I'm a visual person RWD. :D

I think our spouses would have some issues with them. :) The genset was smaller in size than what most folks would use in thier wokshop let alone thier homes. In the states we need at least a 10KVA pot per house. If I remember correctly we put up four or five street lights and one service drop to the city offices. The capacity of the genset was probably smaller than the genset you show in the photo. We actually found (scavanged) two transformers. I remember adding mineral oil to one after patching a bullet hole in the tank. It was a miracle that that it did not blow the fuse. The Genset was about 1/2 mile from the downtown area. Thats why we needed the transformers. The genset could not be moved as it was private and belonged to a person who would share it but would not let it out of his site.

It was a fun weekend.

I'm going to answer for RWD. Transformers are filled with high grade oil for insulation and cooling. Good oil insulates to 40,000 volts per inch, and it passes down to 26,000 volts per inch.

Oil is used as an insulator in those transformers Lostart. The bullet hole let it all run out so RWD patched the hole and filled it back up with whatever oil he could get.

Mind you a couple of drops of lavender oil and at least it would have had a soothing effect on the locals if it had gone boom. :D
