We are currently looking into the use of Penta poles on our rear lot lines. The CCA's as well all know are harder than woodpecker lips and are bad about getting shell rot. While I know CCA poles are very climbable, it makes good business sense to set poles that are easier/safer to climb if possible. Do any of you have any information regarding the benefits/drawbacks of CCA vs. Penta treated poles? It also seems the CCA poles are much more brittle and prone to breaking under stress where a Penta treated pole has more "give" to it. Any info is appreciated.

We have used Penta treated poles for years and I have climbed quite a few of them . The only real issue I have with them is that they are very wet with chemical when delivered and may stay wet for a long time even while in the pole rack . They can be very slippery to climb and can ruin a pair of gloves in a couple of climbs if they are set while wet . They seem to also shell rot just about as bad as anything else . They will most definetely make your eyes burn if you drill holes in them and get a piece of saw dust in your eyes . We were also told to wash hands before and after bathroom breaks if handling this chemical due to birth defect possibilities . Sounds like a great chemical doesnt it ? Pretty much all pole treatments are toxic in one way or another . I am surprised we dont hear ALOT more about this exposure we are subject to on a daily basis. Bear

Why Not Cedar Poles?

Why not steel in poor access areas? I see lot's of REA's using 40' steel now days. The guys say they are only a few bucks higher than wood, and in areas like back lots, mountain tops, and such, it is the only way to go.

Guys just thought I would let you know that we are moving closer to our goal of Penta Poles for rear lot lines. Any information that you are able to share would bring this closer to reality.

I too am curious about wood preservatives. I caught part of a program on TV dealing with this very subject and the contention was that wood preservatives are some of the most toxic chemicals known to man. The purpose of these substances is, of course, to kill any living organism that could cause the wood to decay normally. I've posed this question to company individuals who should be able to find out what the hazards are and get the usual B.S. (Check your M.S.D.S.) This would make good fodder for a discussion.
