Really cool! You have a wonderful talent and you are USING it! That is good! :D

So, did you come up with these ideas yourself? And creating them?

CHICAGO HAND.
01-09-2008, 11:51 PM
Ya pretty much, sometimes I will see a pic in one of my woodworkig nags and then start from there.
I just got back in from the shop it is late everyone is in bed and here is my newest creation.Maybe someone will buy something like this.
The checkerboard end grain board is for a customer on the east coast.
I am kind of liking the sign boards it is more personal.

CHICAGO HAND.

I am gonna build a cutting board with "SWAMPRAT" on it and then you will have to buy it.
Seriously thank you for your compliment.

Hey Chicago. Ever come across the Sawstop?

If you slip or get distracted then it won't cut fingers off.

CHICAGO HAND.

I have seen it demonstrated . Not a bad saw but i already spent enough on a table saw.
If I ever upgrade i might give it a closer look.

CHICAGO HAND.
01-13-2008, 02:12 PM
Two thing's that I just finished.
The pen is for a client who has ordered 15 and we wanted to see how engraving the pen with his company logo would look color filled with silver.
I think it came out perfect, anyone want something like that done with there name or such let me know I can do it.
Also this board goes out to the east coast thursday. I think it came out pretty good and am glad it is done, man was that nerve racking.

One of the crew leaders got this clock for Christmas.
It is the kind that shines the time on the wall or ceiling and it would not stay upright when fumbling for the snooze.
So here is the beginning of a prototype base plate.
The lidded box was made by me to hold ear plugs but after setting it next to the clock it became apparent that the clock is to small.

Making a lidded box on a lathe is something new to me.
It is not as easy as it may look.

CHICAGO HAND.

Here is more pics of the box

I love that cutting board too CH! You hack some great stuff buddy! :D

Man, I wish I had thought of the logo thing for my pens CH. I bet that would look great burned on the wood. Oh well....maybe next time.

CHICAGO HAND.
01-20-2008, 07:22 PM
They may look like your basic round box with lid but let me assure you when it flies off the lathe and tries to take your head off it looks completly different.

01-21-2008, 01:10 AM
Hey CH, those boxes look great. I just inherited a lathe and set of dull tools. After playing with it a little bit I know I need to work on my sharpening skills. Did you have someone teach you or did you learn on your own?

CHICAGO HAND.
01-21-2008, 09:29 AM
Sharpening is what i consider a skill all on its own.
whether it be a knife, chisle, drill bit, lathe tools, or any thing else that cuts material.
I was taught ay an early age how to sharpen a knife then how to sharpen a drill bit and it keeps growing.
My favorite tool to use on my lathe is a piece of 1/2 round high speed steel stock about 12 inches long mounted on a handle with a tip ground about the shape of a finger nail that knocks off the corners of square stock.
high speed steel stays sharp pretty long.
the next favorite tool looks like a chisle with a flat edge and a slight taper on the other side. Not a long taper like the chisle.
I make sure the corners are rounded other wise the 90 degree edges tend to catch and send expensive wood flying thru the shop.
Here are a few pics, dont mind the mess just watch where you are walking.

Daddyof2
01-21-2008, 04:03 PM
Hey man thanks for the info. I think I've seen the round tool in a Rockler magazine or somewhere. The tools I have included 2 chisels the same size, so I think I'll try rounding the corners off one of them. My turning goals is to be able to turn the legs and stretchers for Windsor chairs.

Some banks for my boys made with old post office box doors.

LostArt
03-22-2008, 12:43 PM
Well, that is different CH! Pretty darn cool! :D

I've not opened the package CH. I'm waiting on the Boss's birthday. He is so funny! It's sitting on the dinning table and he says, "What's in the box?" I replied, "Why it's your birthday present dear." He comes in everyday, "Can I open it up now?" I laugh and say, "No, maybe on Easter day."

I know I can't wait to see it either. But, I mostly can't wait to see his face! :D

I'll post a pic of it as soon as he opens it, okay?

Thats some cool work CH and they must be some good old solid doors you got hold of , what are they made of? Looks like the doors were just solid planks of timber...

Here's a bit of techno-art I built with my co-conspirators (The renegade engineers.) I did the design, electronics, software and wiring. They did the stainless steel.

CH, I'm having problems getting pics from my camera to my new computer. Yeah, WHAT ELSE is new for me???! :D Did you keep a pic of what you sent me that you made for the Boss on his Birthday? If so, post it for me.

The Boss loves it. He's remark was, "Damn, that's pretty neat. Same lineman from Chicago? He does real nice work." :D

I'll design what I want here in awhile...when my wife gives me my "allowance", and send it to ya for a quote.;) Seriously.

<Shudder!> Quotes like that make me glad I'm single. ;)

BigClive
04-05-2008, 09:01 PM
I hear ya about bein single though, and If I was your age, and in these times.....I most likely would be too. But, THAT's another whole can of worms I really dont want to open....

At 43 I ain't exactly a spring chicken...

There are a lot of single men out there these days. We seem to be doing OK for ourselves. If anything we have MORE cash because we don't have a family to spend it. On the other hand we don't have someone to push us out the house and make us look for work. Fortunately work looks for me!

I notice a trend in men who seem to go through their lives with a dog as their companion. Sounds like a good idea to me. (Even though I'm a cat sort of person.)

BigClive
04-07-2008, 12:10 PM
So, were ya ever married? Not to get personal and shit...just curious.

Nope. Never had any desire to live with anyone at all. My brothers the same. We don't know if it's the way we were brought up or if it's some weird genetic thing.

LostArt
04-09-2008, 09:42 PM
Had an Uncle that never married either. http://www.avowners.com/forum/smileys/doh001.gif He served in the Navy and then retired. He was my mother's only sibbling that never married. On my father's side, they all married. My Uncle was always good to me and my brothers. He was the one that let me read those Louis L'Amour books.

My cousins and I always thought it queer, but as I grew older, I thought...."to each their own."

CH.....we kinda hijacked your thread buddy! http://www.avowners.com/forum/smileys/doh087.gif

Chicagohand,
I have some small pieces of Zebrawood left over from a guitar I built years ago. I also come across burls every now and then you could do some turning with. I'm trying to convince the local cigar shop to have a pipe carving contest. I was in a shop in Deadwood, South Dakota that had a contest. They supplied the walnut burl and pipe stem for $25. I think that would be a cool thing to do.

CHICAGO HAND.
04-29-2008, 06:26 PM
If you ship me some wood I will make some nice pens for you. I quit smoking from a pipe years ago so you are on your own there.

Thanks LA I just put together a makeshift photo tent and these are some of the pics that came out.

CHICAGO HAND.
06-04-2008, 06:34 AM
I have just finished these for a customer. They are made from walnut and are 6 inches wide and 3 inches deep, not a bad size for a salad bowl. Three of them are solid and three are laminated with three 1 inch pieces. Thanks for looking.

RWD
06-04-2008, 01:45 PM
My guess is that these were not carved with a pocket knife. My problem is that I would not want to eat from them ... I would be afraid the oil and vinigar dressing would stain the wood .... Hey are they dishwasher safe?

RWD

CHICAGO HAND.
06-04-2008, 05:30 PM
They are not to be put in a dish washer and I protect all my food products with mineral oil, they dont stain.
They were turned on a lathe kind of like this guy.

Darn! There was an amazing wooden seat on Douglas Quay in the Isle of Man that I should have photographed for you. It was a massive round thing that was so perfect that it almost looked like it had been done on a huge computerised router and then polished to a shine.

Chicago how much do they sell for? VERY nice work

Not really into the bottle stoppers. Very nice but if it gets opened their will be no need for a stopper

Are those pens made out of wood? I know a guy who collects pens and would love one. How do you buy?

I try and do a few shows a year and right now I am getting into high gear making stuff for a christmas show. I just started getting into pepper mills and they have been a challenge. It seems every new project requires a few new tools. One of these days the wife will get wise to that.

The polyester resin is like glass and has a tendency to blow out at the wrong time.

The lathe work is in the application of the super glue and the sanding and polishing. There is a real trick to applying super glue to a spinning object.
Also super glue is not cheap. But it makes a great finish.

Well here is the first. This is done in maple just to show what can be done. I have quite a few different fonts to play with and colors for the fill after the laser engraving. This pen looks good in an acrylic type material which can be seen on my web page. The possibilities are almost endless with what can be laser engraved. Names, slogans, company logos, etc. A pen like this with one laser engraved line done in wood or acrylic is $50.00 plus shipping.
Color fill is available in Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze, White, Black, Red and Blue.
Check out my web page and poke around for different materials used for the pen.

Just today I gave our principal your wood pens and holder. He is leaving and going to another high school (the same school where the Boss and I graduated--along with our children). He loved it. Here is a tooth pick holder.
These are a pretty good seller at the craft shows. This is a piece of oak which was placed in a wood dye and then put under pressure in a 2 1/2 gallon paint pot and left to soak for 24 hours. It was then finished with quite a few coats of super glue.
Let me know how many you want and me and the boys will get out to the shop and start getting dirty.

CHICAGO HAND.

I recently bought a pressure pot from a guy on craigslist. I also bought a vacuum pump from harbor freight which is useful in getting all the air out of the wood and the dye into the wood.

It does not take to long to dry in the sun. The chunks of wood are pretty small.

Swamp--Hehehe....no bass boat and not for the Boss. I drew an old ship back when my daughter was doing prom her junior yr in high school. The theme was kinda like the Titantic, so I drew it for her class and it sat on an easel as you walked in the door. They had lights shinning on it. It looked better in the dark with the glow of lights on it actually.

Anyway, I have nothing in my house that it goes with. But, my brother has his bathroom in that beachy kinda theme and just got a nice garden tub that has a lift to put him in it. As you know, one of my brothers is handicaped. So, I wanted to give it to him but put it in a cool frame. And CH did it for me and did a fantastic job!!! I'm so happy with it! :D

He laughed at me giving him a pic of the Titanic. "Uh....thanks sis." I laughed and told him he wasn't superstious and neither was I. However, I've been praying for his safe return! :D I told him I had this pic and frame planned in the making since July BEFORE his cruise.

Are ya reading my posts CH? Tell those wild boys of yours to knock it off so you can concentrate. :D

CH, I don't want a letter opener. I never use the one I have. I looked today and I have a Swingline staple remover.

http://www.cleansweepsupply.com/pages/item-swi37141.html

Elegantly designed staple remover is uniquely shaped to gently extract staples without tearing paper. Contoured for comfort with an attractive and contemporary satin finish. Removes all standard and mini-size staples.

I like the grip and the end is not sharp, but it's thin enough to slip in and then there are the sides that stops the slide where you can lift and removes the staple quite easily.

I'd love to have a pretty handle one that you have made and I'm hoping you can work it so it's kinda like the one above. As you see they aren't that expensive, but it would be cool to have an orange and blue one like that specially made by Chicago Hand. :D

This is a carving I did a few years ago, don't know if I ever shared it. It's supposed to be an apprentice on his first pole. He's cut out and bearhugging the pole.

Here's something I built. It's an illuminated frame for the local town hall's yearly display of Christmas trees.

It's based on an aluminium frame with steel mesh supporting sections of LED strip that look like neon. The theme is Las Vegas.

For reference, the Department of Villainy is just a group of bearded friends, and is a play on the local governments department naming system.
