How many of you have had your knee or hip replaced? Right off I can think of 5 guys who have had it done already. 4 new hips and one knee. That's just off my old platform! 2 of them are under 40 years old! Granted one of them hurt it playing hockey. Is this becoming more popular or comon? Just wondering how many of you have had it done or need it done?

But I have had my right ankle and right knee repaired. Just wear and tear after years of humping the black beauties.:D

Had my left ankle surgically cleaned out - not pleasant and dislocated my left knee twice was going to have it fixed up but the doctor said that as I did the Medial Tendon that the risk of it popping back out the other side was high so I just take abit more care these days.

One rebuilt knee and a shoulder had to be cleaned up. I didn't grow up on the "black beauties" we had the pleasure of CCA's. I hated those things.

So what's the answer? We didn't take care of ourselves? The knees, hips, ankles caused by standing in the hooks all day? Then what about the shoulders, rotators, thumb joints? Sure it's hard work but there's other trades just as hard. Why are we falling apart?

Even through I work everyday I still go to the gym. The older I get the more I see the need to stay in shape. Especially the shoulders, low back and knees. Mussels support the joints. ;)

It happens in all the trades, but doesn't get talked about. I'm not convinced that humans were designed for such arduous and repetitive tasks. By the age of forty most of us are experiencing stiff joints and RSI.

There's a theory that you shouldn't work with your arms above head height, but lets face it, that's not really practical. personally I think the biggest shoulder issue is when you are lifting or lowering weight and the arm passes the horizontal position and is momentarily between two muscle groups. The "snatch" as the load is transferred seems to cause damage.

We'll all suffer this type of damage, but I'll bet that if you could live your lives again you'd still choose "manual labour".

Lineman don't make the kinda money they do because they are the smartest kids on the block. Our payscale even if you work thru local 66 is upper middle class. We are at the end of the day professional athletes. Humans did not decend from apes nor are they really equipped to climb like apes... Thats where the ape thing comes from LA... Just think for a moment about the physics of the shoulder joint as you climb up a pole... The range of motion under the stress of your body weight. Then add to that the stress you put on your shoulders as use a squeese gun to press a clamp... the force you put on the clamp is reflected in the force trying to pop your shoulders and elbows out of socket. OH but the glory of a professional athlete... win or loose we get to play the game...

Most lineman are humble people. We go to work any time of day or night. Wind, rain, snow you name it. Keep the lights on. BUT[B][U] it's the firemen, policemen and the postman who get all the credit. [B][U](NOT THAT WE WANT CREDIT) I get calls at home, 8:00 o'clock at night asking to buy light bulbs for the police fund. Same thing, calls to donate to the firemen fund. I ger-n-ass-T-ya, if a linecrew was at the towers on 9/11 they would be the first one's to run in to help people get out of the towers. Find example in Seattle. "Last year's wind storm". When the lights are out, please get my lights on, boy you guys are hero's. But after the lights are on they bitch about how much money Lineman made that year.

Both knees here one 5 years ago the other 7 both are AWESOME in fact the first knee exploded and it was 3 months till the swelling and fluid was down enuff to do the surgery... but I was walking with out crutches 4 days later and on a 200 footer the day after they released me (for light duty rofl) 3 months after the surgery... the second time went even smoother I guess cuz I actually stuck to the PT! and the only thing I regret is that I didn't have them both done at the same time.... but I guess you really can't plan on blowing out your knees rofl...

I think buckets have hurt us too. Think about the position we get in when we are in a bucket, we end up reaching, off balance most of the time. One of the bucket manufacturers used to make a bucket that flared at the bottom so that your feet didn't keep you as far away, wasn't to practical for liners though. I think there are times it would be easier overall on the body to work from hooks, not everyone will agree with statement I know. Remeber, I said there are times.

At times it is "Much" easier to work from the hooks........

I'd rather work from my hooks at least I can lay back in by belt and rest my back by pushing off the pole in a bucket I'm just in agony... I guess that what I get for tearing my self up so badly on the high line when I was young, dumb and full of....
