View Full Version : Reactance of unloaded transformers.

Apart from the rather damaging transformer "ringing" (ferro resonance) producing high voltage transients when an unloaded transformer is connected/disconnected from the primary....
Actually this thread is nothing to do with reactance of unloaded transformers at all.... It's just apparent that Jelly Belly doesn't do "technical stuff" so we can have a wee competition to see if we can make him burst his keyboard completely. :D
So I'm not sure that he is just another manifestation of CL. The grammar is too consistently different.
So what ploy should be use to take him to the next level? Swampy's currently having all the fun.

I notice that he posts during the normal work day. Either he's out of work or..............................? It was also the same with CL.

The main feature of this phenomenon is that more than one stable steady state response is possible for the same set of the network parameters. Transients, lightning overvoltages, energizing or deenergizing transformers or loads, occurrence or removal of faults, live works, etc...may initiate ferroresonance. The response can suddenly jump from one normal steady state response (sinusoidal at the same frequency as the source) to an another ferroresonant steady state response characterised by high overvoltages and harmonic levels which can lead to serious damage to the equipment.
That being said, I think he drinks too much.........
Loo, you'd be surprised how many personal laptops are on trucks now......with wifi connectability................!

But can ferroresonance enter a self sustaining state where the combined inductive and capacitive effects of a particular distribution circuit happen to have the ideal conditions? Or is it limited to one short "ring" from a switching event.
I'd say he's spending a lot of time sending those responses though. he also seems to edit a lot of his posts afterwards. Presumably to add more rude words or fine tune his rants.
I don't reckon I'd enjoy working alongside him anyway. And if he was dumped on my crew I think I'd either send him back, or if he had a history of it I'd suggest that he be discouraged from working with the company.

So what can we do to make him go completely nuclear? I'm thinking we could have a competition to see who can get the word RAT (in capital letters of course) used as many times as possible in response to a provocation.
Or we could send him weird private messages then print the responses here.
Or do we just ask him technical questions and see how he responds.

Technically, I believe it could. But I certainly have no way to prove the theory.

well, i seem to be pretty good at pushing butons. after all, it would seem i pushed buttons enough for someone from the NW to call about my line and get it taken away. wasn't you PA was it :D LOL.

This is a bust Johnny's balls thread!:D
P.S. If it was me I would have told you. I don't know why the hell someone would do something like that.
Harmonic filter reactors FTW!!! especially 3rd,5th and 7th's.... Live works (like electric smelters (your prolly more than familiar with those BigC!) can really make a mess even under optimum conditions...soon as they fire up.... PING!!!! goes the freq's down the line to the can then they just bounce back and forth from the can to the equipment eventually burning $4!T up lol!!!
yeah, I've spent way tomany nights watching Swamp and others (but mostly Swamp) gettin' CL torqued to tight.... but I think this cat's a different dude.... he seems... dunno just fuggin bitter... where as CL seemed... well just smartassed

Course...ya know he'd never talk to ya again.:p
OK. I'm going to send a lurid private message like this:-
Hi John, I love your posts on the forum. I just want you to know that I think they make you sound big, gruff and sexy. If I'm over in the USA in the future can I look you up and maybe we can have a bit of casual gay sex together.
Big hugs from your sexy Scottish pal Wee Clivey.
Do you think he'll:-
A. Not even know what a private message is and ignore the blinking indicator.
B. Respond in his characteristic manner (in capitals of course).
C. Copy my message to the forum then tear into me.
D. Invite me over for some hot sexy fun.
E. Threaten to kill me. :D

I do recall that the electric furnaces had a lot of heavy electrical gear in their direct vicinity. I'm not sure what voltage they worked at, but I'd guess it may have been low voltage, high current, and hopefully the local transformer for that would have limited the amount of harmonics going back to the main power source. Arcs being the electrical equivalent of white noise I guess they tickle every frequency across a broad spectrum.

From this picture of Captain Kirk I guess that he might remove every trace of klingons from Uranus with this particular weapon. I think that big bad alien is about to "get it".

It's one of those scenario's that might occur once in a blue moon, and you'd need to leave a power condition monitor connected to the lines to log it. (Then of course it wouldn't occur.)
I get the feeling that ferroresonance might be a word that's dropped by engineers when they really didn't have a clue why the new transformer blew up as soon as the cutout was thrown in.
He might well be quiet in real life. Maybe the Internet is a way he can let rip with his deep emotions. :)

i think i'll ask him what a recloser does, and see what response we get. then when he doesn't answer, i'll tell what it does and we can all laught at him for being outsmarted by a highschooler LOL :D

I'm not sure but I think FERRO = IRON -- RESONANCE = not a clue.
Clive - I would have to go with answer B and D.

Ehh, most of the ones I worked around had a 34.5 delta feeder to 'em... Lineman got the job cuz the narrowbacks gave it up to much heavy riggin and $4!t I guess.... 3 phase amour tech cable... that stuffs a beast... usually the feeds come right outa the tub (230kv stepdown on the few projects I worked) into the switch gear... then into the harmonic filters then to the guns.... all the projects I worked on were for AK Steel and Alcoa... was nice to be able to hang my tools up after a few months of highline to get to the plant...
So what happened, finally run that prick off the site? Damn a snow storm (on call atm too) I miss all the drama!!!

a collar rope and leg irons... the original highranger
under "ideal " curcimstances set up a sustainable ring. But all of it I've witnessed blew a fuse real quick and stopped it. Other wise it would be time to drop the stick and run like hell ! I dont know if he could resist an invite like that Clive !

I agree, there will be more. Lets look back some. I remember 'KINGRAT' he came in like a storm and then left. Then CL spred his flames around some. But this JB guy started out with some good replys and then went nuts on us. I don't reply to em and just hope they leave!

Hmm. I'm not sure what fed the arc furnaces. I was at that age where I just did what I was told without asking too many questions. They sure sounded impressive when they were running though. Like a lightning storm in a furnace.
It's just a shame we didn't have access to JB's webcam while he was typing those messages. We'd probably have seen and heard his teeth grinding as he stabbed away at the keyboard.

Oh look! Jelly Belly has worked out how to read his private messages and got my "sexy message". Here's his reply:-
you are one sick ****. i knew your were a fag. try dickdrooler (dirtdoober) he seems to have an obsession with rats being up guys asses.
I notice that he did it all in lower case letters this time. I think it's because he's gone all bashful and shy because he's never experienced love before. :D
I also noticed that he seems to pop on every so often just to check if his flame thread is still running. ;)

We were both right.... The arc furnaces themselves used a moderately low voltage at high current (typically 500V at about 40,000A!) and that probably explains why a high voltage feed was used to a transformer (20MVA???) in the direct vicinity of the furnace. I do recall being given the slightly unnerving job of hooking up wires to the huge capacitor banks which were probably used to quench the worst of the harmonic interference generated by the arc.

Swamp and all the rest of you guys, Can't tell you how much damn fun it is to sit here and read all the posts where you get on each others ass. Lot of the technicle(sp) stuff I may or may not have known. After being away for 9 yrs, I now clutter up my head with the best golf courses and fishing hole locations. Keep it up and be safe.
