Anybody know anything about the utility txu, is it a good utility to work for
i almost went to work for them but found better all around at the coop im at. ive heard they try move you around from area to area when they need to fill positions. they are mostly in town and were mixed in the outer parts of the city and go to the rural. contractors are doing alot of there work right now round here, and alot of there stuff is death on the wood but they seem to have nice equipment. since there still in threre buyout deal going on it may be a bit unstable
good luck!! what area are ya lookin at?

I worked there from 01-04. Started out as a grunt at the southwest service center in Dallas. At the time it was the only union shop (local 69) in the company, now the whole company is organized. There was all the overtime you wanted, I think I had about 1900 adjusted hours the first year I was there. The process was to put together a crew based on hours. They started at the low man and went up the list until crew was filled. If not enough people voluntered the low man was forced to be on call. The contract we had was doubletime for callout, 1.5X for scheduled. There was also a rest time provision for work done after hours. In the summer we put on evening crews to change transformers, pick up wire etc. I don't know how the current contract works though. There were lots of climbing jobs because of the lack of alleys in south Dallas.
The cost of living really wasn't too bad. I lived in DeSoto, about 20 min from the service center, and rented a decent 900 sq ft appt for around $600/mo. We did have to work in some bad parts of town, but I never had any problems. Where I lived, I never had any problems with crime or neighbors. Traffic was tiresome, as you would expect, but not as bad as some other cities.
Hope this helps give an idea what to expect.
What is the other utility you are looking at? I am now with PNM, and could tell you about Texas New Mexico power. PNM has also just tenetivly aquired Cap Rock elec.

As Texas1 said TXU is now ONCOR. We are voting on our first contract as all linemen under Local 69. As far as moving people around it happens some but also, I have been in the same location 27 out of 30 years with them. The location I’m in is looking for 3 linemen right now. 2 in Lufkin and 1 in Centerville. Lufkin is deep east Texas, Centerville is about 70 miles due west of them and 100 miles south of Dallas. Which is still too damn close far as I’m concerned. This link should take you to the job post. http://www.txucorp.com/careers/jobs/our_positions/listings.asp?ID=10569
