3 million lose power in Florida blackoutBy JESSICA GRESKO Associated PressFebruary 26, 2008 03:49 AMMIAMI - A South Florida nuclear reactor automatically shut down today, causing sporadic power outages throughout the state that affected 3 million people. Authorities did not specify the cause of the shutdown but say there were no safety concerns.Power was already restored in some places by early afternoon and was estimated to be fully restored by 6 p.m., Florida Power & Light said. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the two Florida Power & Light nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point plant 30 miles south of Miami automatically shut down. Two other power plants farther north, the Crystal River reactor and St. Lucie twin reactors, continued to operate, although officials at those two facilities noticed the grid disturbance. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said the outages were technical, not criminal. "It's a matter of just a cascading effect," he said. "We don't know whether the grid disturbance caused the units to shut down or that their shut down caused the grid disturbance," said Kenneth Clark, a spokesman at the NRC regional office in Atlanta. He said the two reactors were automatically shut down. "There are no safety concerns. The reactors shut down as designed," said Clark in a telephone interview. He said both reactors continued to have offsite electric power. He said two coal-burning power plants at Turkey Point also shut down. Outages appear to be concentrated in the southeast portion of the state, including Miami, but were also reported in along the southwest coast and northeastern part of the state as well as in the Florida Keys. The outages began shortly after 1 p.m. EST, though power in some affected areas had been restored an hour later. In Collier County in the southwestern portion of the state, sheriff's spokeswoman Karie Partington said officials were working to determine the extent of the outages. "We really don't have a good picture of it," sheriff's spokeswoman Karie Partington said.

My name is David Fleshler, and I'm a reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. We're doing an article on FPL's reliability record - whether the company has invested enough in the system, whether it's hired enough linemen, whether it relies too much on less-experienced contractor workers, why certain areas suffer repeated outages etc etc. I'm talking with the PSC, FPL, outside experts, union officials. Does anyone on the forum have any ideas, opinions, suggestions? My email is dfleshler@sun-sentinel.com. A Prophetic thread from 2005... click the link to Davids thread and see who turned off the lights in Florida...

Uh oh, the suits have found an individual to blame.
Personally I think they should trip out other parts of the power grid to test it. That way there's less likely to be big surprises in the future.

Crapping his pants by the sound of it.
(An inductor flashed over internally.)
Bear in mind that the word "engineer" seems to be used for anyone technical. I had my picture published in the local paper last year while putting up the city's Christmas lights and was referred to as an "engineer".

Don't care who try they blame, they are lying. (FPL) Fu@#ing people and loving it has been screwing the people and there employees for as long as I can remember. I know it's not long, I only worked for them 25 years. The only reason I stayed there was because of FAMILY. Now the family is gone and so am I.Best thing I ever did was quit that and get out of that non english speaking welfare abusing state. I hope next hurricane takes and wipes it off the map. Only to just south of Orlando, don't want Swamp to be affected. By the way I was born and raised in south florida. Thanks for letting me say my what I feel.

My memory isn't what it used to be but wasn't there a video of a substation blowing up when the power transformer vented oil with a bus arc in the station on the internet about three-four years a go. If I remember right that was supposed to have been a Miami substation (I assume FP&L) where the relays had been bypassed the day before for testing then not put back online. You would think some-one would learn there is a reason for relays.

From what I understand thats the one. Thats the Ives substation. I live on Ives Dairy Road. This facility has had other problems. Please view this thread and tell me about "high current density"?

That was the video I meant. My understanding was that the station's High side protection had been taken off-line for testing at least a day or two before (maybe more) and was not put back in service when the testing was complete. Then when some unknown (squirrel, snake, branch, etc) created a bus fault, there was no local clearing of the fault. Finally the fault current thru the transformer boiled the oil it vented out the gaskets and the vapor hit the arc. WHAM. The least effeceint way to clear an arc.

Least efficient, but most visually pleasing. :D
