Fallen Power Pole Kills Contract Utility Worker

A utility worker from Oklahoma was killed Saturday when a power pole crushed him.

Thomas Lansdale was part of a utility crew working to restore power knocked out by Thursday's storms.

Witnesses said crews were using a small crane to hoist a 4,000-pound utility pole up when the cable snapped and it fell on Lansdale.

Residents in the heavily damaged Hurst neighborhood were stunned by the weekend tragedy.

"It is so sad. It's tragic," homeowner Lorie Disinski said. "We came through this all the way around and it's just sad that the people who are coming to help us to restore electricity have a loss of life."

Although she's spent the past couple of days clearing debris from her lawn, Disinski admits her problems seem trivial compared to this loss.

Other residents and fellow contract workers were noticeably distraught by the accident.

Another subcontractor working for Oncor also was injured.

The injured worker was treated and released from the hospital.

Quanta Utility Services, the contract company doing the work, is investigating the cause of the accident.

More than two days after the storms about 2,500 do not have power, electric officials reported about 6 p.m.

Another lineman here in Houston was killed this week. They had set a new pole next to one rotted by woodpeckers... An apprentice was on the old pole untying they primary when the old pole broke... The apprentice rode it to the ground and was crushed. The details are sketchy at this time, but that was the story I heard.

These types of accidents are happening more and more... These poles are old and you don't know what they are going to do when you start messing with them.... I've seen one hit the ground and hurt two guys real bad.. They were lucky...
Don't listen to the dumb ass foreman thats says that pole ain't goin nowhere...... It'll go to the ground faster than crap no matter how much wire is on it... and you'll be dead,, and he won't go to your funeral or buy your kids clothes...... be smart, be safe...
