I'll have to be honest. I went to Grisofts site to download the free version from a known good source and like you I found it was a full suite that started getting a bit pushy. They seemed to be forcing you in the direction of a "trial" instead of the usual free version.
On the basis that I'm careful enough that AVG has never found a virus on my laptop I decided to uninstal it and perhaps move back to the older version. Then I noticed that without an antivirus program checking everything out my laptop seemed to run a whole lot faster, so I've just left it off until I feel I really need an antivirus check. I've still got the Zonelabs firewall in place though.
If you think about it, if it wasn't for the virus writers in the first place our systems would be faster and safer with much less wear on the hard disk caused by regular scans. I say we kill them all. :D

I downloaded that AVG and boy did it ever mess with my cpu. It took 10 minutes to turn the damn thing on after that. Once I had the cpu all up and running I couldn't even open internet explorer without it taking at least a minute or two. I uninstalled it and everything is fine now. Maybe it is just my cpu. I dont know.

If looking for programs like spybot and adaware be VERY careful of some look-alike names or dubious sources. There's a lot of spyware masquerading as legitimate software.
I've added some links to the legitimate software below.
Spybot Search & Destroy free spyware scanner is at:-

Adaware is at:-

Zonealarm firewall is at:-

Ok.
Don't get your post I guess Lood.
What are you runnin? Avira has been workin pretty good for me, and It uses ALOT less resourses on my computer. A bit "Different" to set up, but I'm likin it a bunch better than the NEW AVG.
You LIKE it or not. If not, Why? I tried Comodo, but it didn't like my system setup I guess. I've heard alot of people have good results with it though.
I'm runnin Avira. When you run a scan the program name is Luke Filewalker!
