To be honest? I'd find that slightly patronising and embarrassing. The first thing I'd want to do is remove my combats and get into civilian clothing to avoid it.
I'll bet if it takes off you get weirdo's walking about in ebay uniforms just so they can get the sign.
Heres the deal Clive. These guys are told what uniform they are supposed to wear while traveling. You are still military and beleive it or not a lot of these guys may not have "dress up" Civilian clothes if they are going to or from theater.
We wore dress (Crackerjacks or Salt and Peppers) in my day.
Clive I've bought more than one lunch or meal for these guys at the airports I've been in. They are respected by all but a few. Regardless of the side you take on why they are there. I was never shot at while in the military and as a civilian I made a few more $'s and was expected to do what ever it took to do my job. Getting shot at is not fun. These guys deserve our thanks as they are not doing it for the pay thats for Damn sure.

I'll be working with the military from tomorrow for a couple of months. I do know what it's like to be shot at and I'll have the duty of searching my electrical cabins for bombs if the sniffer dogs detect anything on their daily sweep, so I'm aware of military experiences. But I still think that the gesture being proposed is much more patronising than a simple thumbs up or nod.
Then again, you Americans don't do "subtle". ;)
Clive I hear you there. It does look like the person is being a bit gatuatis, but then I don't have a problem saying "Hey thanks, let me buy you a beer." or just plain "thanks for all man." I'd guess that it's more of a move to get folks to at least do something.
