we use dawn soap and water in refillable stainless steel fire extinguisher tanks to put out pole fires in the summer but don't know what we can do to winterize these tanks to keep from freezing on trucks. we used rv antifreeze but heard that it weakened the stainless liner. just wanted to know what the rest of the lineman world used for this instance.
dry chemical extinguishers on all our trucks. Have used em a few times on poles over the years .

you could try glycol. its cheap and considered non-toxic. its what they use at the airport to de-ice the plane. its also the main ingredient in stick deodorent. it is an alcohol based product and considered slightly flammable in pure form, a ten or twenty percent mix should be fine. check with your local fire dept. to see what they think. you still have a couple weeks left so I would mix up a batch and practice on some fire.

we have the powder charges on all trucks for emergencies but turn to be very costly when extinguishing 50 plus pole fires per year. i appreciate your info and think i am going to research topgroove's glycol preference. does this chemical deteriorate the stainless steel liner in fire extinguishers? just curious to see if it would break them down or weaken them

glycol is non caustic and should have no effect on stainless steel
