All these line schools are forking out these kids when there are hundreds of guys signed in the books waiting to get back to work. The school im about to graduate from went had 35 kids last year to 75 kids this year to 100 kids next year. Holy cow where they gonna go? Seems like everybody I talk to says they are layed off. I got into this industry thinking there was job security maybe i made a mistake. Does being a lineman mean living out of a hotel? who wants to do that at my age. Anybody have an opinion on how difficult it is to find a good job where a guy can sleep in his own bed most nights, or do you love the work so much it dont matter.

If you want job security, stop the whinning. A good line shool graduate has about the same skill level as a step 4 apprentice. Get into the union and finish what you started as far as training to be a JL. Takes about 7000 hours. Then if you make it, YOU might try to get into a utility where you can sleep in your own bed and everything else that goes with it. Do not bring your whinny little ass to outside construction. Construction guys spend a lot of time away from home, but moma loves the pay check.

Im on Swamps side here boys.. Ya gotta git in where ya fit in... Aint no work at home load up the truck and camper and get to where its at.. Mama loves the money like Swamp said and dont worry Jody will take care of her while your gone..
If working 9 to 5 and being a utility lineman with all the utility bs and politics go for it.. Hope your bed is comfy. Construction hands or atleast me personally cant stand apes crying about wanting to be at home and missing their families.. We right out there with em and just cause we may be hard asses we do miss the family no less than you.. We just came into this trade and accepted all that comes with it.. So man up and get out there and find some work.. I know someone posted a rumor 702 is bout to take some apes.. Look into it..
Just be mindful that if you do show up pissin and a moanin that you are just an ape and theres tons of schools crankin out apes to replace you. So do your job and learn all you can and if you dont want to do that then my suggestion would be to take off kickin rocks and counting insulators back to the show up so you can find a better suited job.
This day and age in such a tough world seems like the youth has gone soft.. I believe were in for a rude awakening once all the baby boomers retire.. I know Im nervous.

ape its short for apprentice.. Yet another thing in this trade as well as many others you didnt know.. What made you wanna be a Great Lineman? Was it the great pay or the great hours? Stive to be a journeyman lineman and make journeyman pay dont sell yourself short.. You just have alot to learn about this trade if your gonna do construction. Otherwise find a utility and get on there so you can sleep well at night..
Now you boast about your hard workin abilities.. Dont boast it show it and prove it. You talk like us journeymen aint worked a lick the past ten years.. But let me ask you this... How many lineman can roof a house? and how many roofers can climb a 60 foot pole and cut in hot deadends?? Just some food for thought..
And one more bit of advice.. Work smarter not harder..

Great point, your right. It dont take much skill just endurance to roof especially if i can do it! I have a lot of respect for lineman dont get me wrong but I know i wont treat the apprentices like dirt. You gotta start somewhere right. Thats the reason I joined this site so I can get some insight from the experienced. And thats all I got to say bout that.

Your career is going to be very short lived the way your going about it now... you can build a reputation very quick in linework... being that you haven't even worked a real day it's not looking good so far.
Take that for some advice.

Im a 22 year old hard worker, and I agree with that last paragraph, there is a lot of soft youth. Its up to you journeymen to keep us apes educated in the best way.
I work my ass off everyday as i have for 6 years, thats why I will surpass the other young guys out there and have a job as a lineman.

I've got my JL ticket two years ago and have worked close to home for one month of that. It is bad no matter where you go, the only thing that makes it better is you. The guys who show up every day and don't fu(king whine and cry and put in an honest days work for their pay are the ones who are still working. The guys who want to take a week off here and hunting and fishing season there, are the ones that get laid off first. So many older guys have told me about the 1970's and 80's work shortage. They told me about tramping for 4-10's. Last summer I traveled for 5-10's and it paid the bills. "Feast or famine"

What people that are coming out of line schools don't understand is they don't know anything yet???you have to understand one thing as a JL it is part of are job to keep you alive??? remember one thing lineman are a different breed this trade is not for the weakheart.I work at home when I can but if there's no work hit the road it's part of the trade if you don't like that then you are not going to make it
