Have a buddy that works for H&M (horrable managment) and is running a crew and the otherday they were sent out to be the qualfed observers for a clean up crew that had to clean some asbestos in a hot vault when they got out there the asbestos was on the lead splices and the cable was HOT there was oil in the hole so the splices were probally leaking and the racks that the cable were on were falling out of the wall with 3 different circuits on them...The Forman called the gf and told him this should be done deenergized and the gf told him do what your told and get it done...the clean up crews was non electrical workers and new nothing about energized cable...The Forman said I will not be responsable for those guys if something happens it his ASS the company said it's not his responsablity and if something happened he would not get in trouble... It California land of the lawyers if something happen he would be going to jail and now they want to fire the crew for refusing to do the job...they have a young gf that has been a lineman for about 10 minutes and is on a power trip it sounds like bunch of bullsh/t if you ask me... Just wondering what you guys think is this common anywhere else...oh ya the clean up crew were non union to...
Whats the primary voltage on the splices ? How many OSHA rules is this GF wanting them to break ? Sounds like I would need to talk to some one over this idiots head.

Of course in an investigation the GF will lie through his teeth and say he was never informed of the problem.
I @$$ume H & R equals Henkels & McCoy?
You got that right!!!
I had my Foreman (who was an idiot anyways go figure) write me up for not having on steel toed boots (I ALWAYS wore my 16" Red Wings) but yet nobody else on the crew had them on either when asked. The reason I was the only one wrote up? One of their "linemen" dumped a 50 class 2 on my leg destroying alot of stuff in my foot. They figured since I got hurt I HAD TO BE WROTE UP FOR SOMETHING. I listened to the phone call from the Foreman to the GF because he had that Bluetooth in his truck and the GF said "well write him up" when he was told I was hurt and had to go to the ER and came out with a cast on my foot. He asked if the rest of the crew if they had on steel toes and all of them said no, so the GF said "well just give them a warning".
The safety book CLEARLY read steel toes were preferred but NOT mandatory. About 6 months later the new safety book said "STEEL TOES REQUIRED".:D
So you're right Steve, these p.o.s. GF's will DO ANYTHING to save their jobs and keep "costs down" all in the name of the company.

Thats whats wrong with most of the American kids these days. They expect to top out and be GF's within 90 days or they quit and go elsewhee.

It sounds like H&M was doing a refurbish job on some vaults and they probably hired the crew in the hole, that is probably why the sent a HM crew to be safety obervers. The foreman should have shut the job down regardless what the GF told him. How did they get in the vault in the first place- sounds like they did not check for gas or any other precautions before entry. Was not there do not know all the facts- but one thing i do know, HM is union company. My IBEW ticket classifies me as JL even though I do foremn and GF positions. I look at it on occassions just to remind myself of that, next job i could be in the bucket or in the hole- my point is that as a JL I'll do what the Fmn or GF wants done as long as it is safe and I feel comfortabe with their ways- but as a JL I have the ultimate say-so, if it ain't safe or the plan is flawed and could get someone hurt my self or crew member I have the right and obligation to tell the boss screw you I( we ) ain't going to do it your way. I expect that of my crews when I am GF or Fmn. After all we are all in it together, some of us have greater responsbility than others on the job, but we are one team. My military days- a team lives together, survives together, or dies together

That seems to be Henkels style out here get em green, give them a truck, let them by $500,000 dollar homes and a bunch of toys and now you own them. Henkels has plenty of GF's and FM who outside of an apprenticeship haven't spun a wrench or strapped on their belt in years. Those are facts spent 4 years in Yukon yard.

Litago,Coleman, the whole bunch at Yukon, and some at Live Oak have all went from the ape program to GF without even wearing out a set of tools.Pouk is the same way though , Dave Rodriguez is a white ticket even,go figure, and his buddy Andre Amore is a joke, but if you suck a mean d*&#k you get to run around and be foreman or GF......Mr. Apple is 100% right get 'em young and make them think THEY are something special, and get 'em to the point they can't afford(literally) to say no to anything and you got them by the balls!!!! Mountain Power up north did the same thing, little sawed off Lennart wasn't fit to be GF,he tried telling me how long he'd been doin linework one day, bragg'n bout "the old days". He topped out 6 months before me!
I don't think that a hand should be able to take GF job until he has worked for a number of years as a lineman and foreman! But that's just my opinion. Some of these guys grow a tail the minute the get in that foreman pick up. Wanting to skip lunch and bend rules to "get it done" for the company, **** that!!! Talk all the shit you want and bad mouth me cuz I slow walked you or what ever else you wanna say,but when a guy sells out and starts sucking up and pulling ratty shit like this stuff H&M did down south,I'm dragg'n!
That's really the only bad thing in this trade,to me anyway is the cutthroat attitude A LOT of guys have, selling out a fellow lineman so you can move up the ladder, seen it a billion times sure all you seasoned hands have too, stab a guy in the back for a few extra bucks on your check, makes me wonder if it's really a brotherhood sometimes......

I've worked with assholes you just mentioned. "Lets get it done so we look good" and the power company says good job then you are on the first train out once the budget is spent. All that run run run bullshit is for the birds because it all boils down to $$$$ instead of "what you can do".
Me I'd rather make sure I go home everyday. Who cares how many poles you set or how many poles you clipped in while skipping lunch. I'd rather work my safe pace and know for sure I'm going home to my family.
ES, sounds like its the same out West with you as it is here in the Dirty South.

Just so he could stay in good with martinson and english,it must have worked though cuz now he's GF over at Michels and martinson is superintendent. Now he's got some guy up in Shasta building him a little mini Harley just like english's bike. I used to call him Banty, cuz he runs around just like my wife's little roosters,,,,,,,

He wasn't in his tools long just like alot of suck asses you have to be a lineman before you are a boss but some companys like young guys that do whatever they say so they move up really quick just like E.S. Said

And that is why the contractors want portability......they want company hands and we want to train our hands to be Union and keep tramping.... alive....

Another classic example on how Hay & Manure believes they're getting ahead by putting a bunch of diaper linemen in charge of running a multi-million dollar business!
By industry standards, it takes six to seven years for a JL to become well seasoned. And yet we have a contractor out here in SoCal that is high on safety and approaches everything with a ZERO TOLERANCE attitude!!! So what does H&M do???? They take a 27 year old 90 day wonder and put him charge as a GF. A kid with ZERO experience as a JL!!! A KID that basically threw the Brotherhood under the bus for a gauranteed fifty, a pick-up, and a cell phone!!!
It's funny...the GF's at that company get away with murder, but yet if the grunt forgets to put out a wheel chock, they want to fire the whole crew!!!

Amen, Have spent alot of time stickin 34, and hookin backyard poles, only to get fired or wriitten up for not climbing in a set of gloves that are my last line of defense, of carrying a sick lineman for a couple of hours. Aint that right, Curt. A brotherhood only belongs to those that actually do the work. All the things I have read on this thread are true. Therefore those that cant work find a place to hide within their locals while those that can keep this trade and brotherhood alive. My username is my name, there is no hiding here. Godbless those who let their work talk for them.

The question is...when is H&M going to start holding MANAGMENT accountable??? How many times have the GF's and superintendents used company pick-ups for their own personal use. Using H&M pick-ups to haul boats to the river and qauds to the dessert!
Or even better yet, the GF's that come out on a scheduled outage on a Saturday night only so they can SLEEP in the pick-up!!!!
And this is the out fit that brags about Performance....
WHAT A JOKE!!!!

Diaper Lineman Diaper Lineman!!!!!
I don't know a thing about these people you are talking about. But I do know that most of these kids have more knowledge that I did after five years. They are just taught more. Sure they need to spend time grooming and learning, but for about 35 years I don't know any apprentice of the year in most of the union trade apprenticeship programs that didn't get a good position soon after turning out. Not just H&M which I have worked for a time or two, on the East coast and Missouri.
Don't like him. It ain't called a drag bag for nothing.
I @$$ is Red my money is Green Fuk H&M and their Electric Machine.:mad:
So how long after retiring does it take before one does not have any "Draggin Flies" hovering over ones head?
