Always Always listen to the voice of experience. If the J man has only been topped out for a year and a half he has very little while the old foreman has shitloads. Tell yer J man yer gonna listen to the more experienced of the 2.Theres always more than one way to skin a cat but usually one way works better than others I spect the foreman knows that way because of his experience.

Most JLs that have just topped out still have a lot to learn, so I would follow the foreman's plan & try not to get in to a pissing match with the new JL , sometimes they just want to try & show that they all of a sudden they know it all. Most lineman do not come into there own until around 9 or 10 years.

There is one in every shop! The foreman is the boss and is ultimately responsible for everything that happens. Maybe the foreman will eventually get fed up and put the lineman in his place, or maybe he knows in a few years he is retireing and the journeyman can have at it! Don't let that lineman get you in a bind!

Hard to say what to do without knowing more about the attitudes and personalities involved.

All depends what experience it is also. If 33 of those 35 years was pushing a pen and observing from the ground, that isn't jack sh*t. Age wise, I'm in the middle and can kind of see both situations. Seen to many "old timers" going to show us how it's done only to uncradle the bucket and take out a phone line in all of eight seconds. Yeahhhh, really looking forward to working 12kv+ with you:rolleyes:

Have been lineman, foreman, GF, foreman, lineman, and back and forth and back and forth, I have to disagree and say JL has the final say. He's in the bucket, his NAME may not be on the job, but it is his LIFE on the line and his techniques rule. Being in the air with him, he has to trust you, and you have to trust him! He has enough to consider without him turning his back and worrying about you going awol and running with another idea:eek: whether a foreman told you it or not. That foreman isn't worth jack if he is secretly telling you to do something else without the lineman's input. What causes the majority of accidents? Most often because people simply aren't on the same page. And as foreman, to encourage such a situation is asking for an accident.

The foreman is there to tell you what needs to be done, things to consider, and maybe the order in which he would like things done but at far as how to hang or position a hoist, he needs to STFU. Being a foreman, I don't expect to baby my lineman. I realize there are different ways to do things and sometimes I'll look up and see an obvious way to do it better or faster, but I bite my tongue. After the job is done, I'll talk about his procedure to him and drop some better ideas around. If he wants to utilize those ideas, that's his call.

As foreman, I give a time frame, a general procedure of events, maybe how we're going to hang the OCR/bank, and safety issues to consider, but I expect my lineman to get-it-done and hand out the orders to his apprentice how he sees fit. He's a lineman, that should be fully within his capabilities. If not, he shouldn't be topped out.

If lineman and foreman ideas are differing that much, foreman needs to get a new lineman.

This is use it or lose it kind of work. I'm just vary cautious about putting years in the trade in front of "time in the saddle." To an extent, I trust a kid who has had his head between phases every day for the past three years than an old timer that wants to fly a bucket and ride again for old time sake, 40 years in the trade be damned.

Speak your piece dallas, Always.
Say "Shit" when ya got a mouthful.

Just do it...as you did.
With some "tact".
You're gonna be a good Lineman.

Swamp we can agree with that post. He made the right decision in my head too. To me if anyone says any different just wants to get you run off. Like swamp said, ALWAYS speak your mind on stuff like that but dont come across as a threat, but like you said you did on here. Its the best way to put everyone on the same page regardless of who wants what done their way. Stay safe brother and hope your talk really makes your job that much better. It should! You damn sure did the right thing!

I appreciate the replies...this morning before we left the yard I called my foreman over and we had a talk... then we got the JMan's foreman over and, they know what I'm talking about...today worked another pole with the guy and his attitude changed, despite a few remarks from him every now and then the pole change out went smooth.

I had talks with the journeyman before about it, shit never worked...

You did the right thing brother. Always do the same if it happens again to put everyone back on the same page, but make sure you do it the way you did this time as well. You dont want to piss anyone off but you want everyone to be on the same page. That way it doesnt cost yall time on the pole and can make a job that much more safer. Congrats, you did the right thing.
