It was in wild, wide and wonderful Wyo. We had a pretty good imbalance on a 4 KV sub. The powers decided we'd do a little load balance. So we talked it over one morn. and our little 3 man crew started right after 0800. The foreman Harry, the trucky and old Ish. To the sub. and checked the meters again. Yep pretty bad.
Right away I could see the other two were in the dark. I smiled inside and thought, this is gonna be fun. After following the circuit about 15 minutes a 25 KVA pot was spotted on the overloaded phase. The little foreskin said. Well I guess we can move that one over. Now we had about a 100 plus amps to move and I said. Hell that won't be more than 5 amps if we're lucky. Gonna take forever. So there was quiet and we kept on driving the circuit. Finally I said. Why don't we find a pretty good lateral off the feeder and bump some primary over and maybe get 40 or 50 amps in one whack. We located a 2 phase open Wye primary off the main. I said. Hell I'll climb up there, jerk it off and move everything off the afflicted phase. The foreman said. No, it'll mess up the rotation. I said hells bells, if you move both it'll be alright. I couldn't convince him. He said let's go to the office and check with Dave (the serviceman). So to the office and talked with the manager Ray, who was even stupider than Harry and with Dave. It was finally decided that Dave would go to a down stream bank (open Wye) and take rotation and then after we got thru dinking around would check it again to make sure it was okay.
I think I was in the warehouse and Dave came out there. I said. Hell Dave, if you move both phases it'll be right on rotation. Dave said. Well I'd want to be sure. I thought Mother, he's as dumb as they are. He went and got a rotation meter and looked at me and said. I don't even know how to use one of these. DAVE HAD WORKED FOR THE CO. SINCE 1946! He had started as a serviceman's helper and had never been a lineman. I said. Come out here I'll show you something. I went to the 3 phase 208 padmount that served the office. I opened the door and attached the rotation meter and spun the dial. That's all there is to it Dave. Dave replied. Well I'll be damned.
And you know the upshot of it. We never even bumped the lateral over. I think we just wound up moving some pots until we got a little better balance. Never in all my born days.
