It's quite clever that JD have "recycled" their old spent barrels through a wood chipper to sell them as barbecue flavouring wood chips.

It IS Clive. And let me tell ya what bud. If you haven't smoked a steak over some of those chips...well..., you're missin out.
As for "Drinkin". Well, I don't know if you even know what Everclear, or Golden Grain is. It's ...Pure medical grade PURE 190 proof, booze. No Impuritys. Just Pure. Costs about $26 a half a gallon here in the states. Ya can't buy it in all states. As here in FloriDUH....ya can only buy it in 150 proof. Go to Georgia though, and you can buy the 190 proof.
Put about 3 handful of those chips into a cut gallon of Everclear, add a couple tablespoons of Cherry juice, a bit of vanilla extract...and anything else ya might want to experiment with...let me know what ya think after about a month.

This everclear stuff sounds like industrial alcohol. :nightmare:

I think I'd stick to experimenting with a good quality neutral spirit like vodka. Cheaper and easier to source too.

I've never heard of that before Bren. I rarely drink, so I don't get to sample these delights much.
Here's the Wikipedia entry for Poitin (Poteen).

I've found another Wikipedia article that deserves its own thread....

Here is a basic recipe for the legendary apple pie moonshine. It’s really easy to make, and you don’t even need moonshine (though you can’t really call it apple pie moonshine if you don’t use moonshine.)
Ingredients:
1 gallon apple cider
1 gallon apple juice
3 cups white sugar
8 cinnamon sticks
1 liter bottle of 190 proof moonshine or grain alcohol
Directions
1.In a large stock pot, combine the apple cider, apple juice, sugar, and cinnamon sticks.
2.Bring it to a boil, then take it off the heat and allow it to cool.
3.Add the liter of high proof liquor.
4.Pour this into mason jars, put the lids on, and let it mellow out. You could drink it right away, but it does get better after a couple of weeks.
This recipe makes about 9 quarts of apple pie moonshine. You could easily cut this recipe in half if that is too much.
