Just wondering if any utilities ,weather it be small or large are still with-out computers in their vehicles.years ago we had at all calls done by radio, which tied up the channel big time, later they split up in three ways..........one channel for overhead, one for urd and one for trouble....they still use those mainly for lock-outs or switching.....just wondering who is still stuck in the cave-man days.

We are a small Cooperative, just 30 trucks and none mount a computer as of yet.

Does that include the little computers we have in our pockets these days? An Android phone is running Linux and can do the whole communication, database and GPS location thing.

We've no computers... But we've new trackers to tell them where we are. . Unbelieveably we just got a "new landrover" with 170,000 miles on the clock. And they just fitted it with a tracker.
Shows where their priorities are........... :-(

Clive,Ill be honest, and I hand it to anyone that can work, and work the tougher jobs and not break their expensive phones, knowing me and the mud, taking the hard way sometimes just to save time,id be crying when looking at a broken phone....who knows what them phones will be like in just 10 years from now.

You missed my post about ruggedised phones reppy. I've been using a Motorola Defy Plus for a while now and it's rated for impact and water. I think as time goes on the smart phones will get tougher and cheaper.

Let me guess. They said they were fitting the trackers for YOUR safety and not so they could monitor you from the comfort of their offices.

They have Gps on the computers here, have for a few years now...there is a device on top of the vehicle that is used for that, saying that it is said that you can cover them up and the gps doesnt work.....I never tried it cause I didnt mind them knowing where I was.....but dont get me wrong i have been tempted, just to confuse them, but then again its pretty much old technology now and who would have nothing better to do by watching
I have many ways to confuse them anyway,I dont know if its just me or a trait of linework that I love getting the higher ups confused....always have had fun while being paid, weather they knew it or not......thanks again Clive for that phone info,if one can last with you,it most likely is worth buying......you should be on a commercial advertising a phone that can last through the tough times.
