I have a question on when to use a side tie on ple top or pin top glass or polymer insulators. yes should be an easy question but i cant get a straight answer. Reasearch ive done says the top grooves are designed to be put in top grove for an angle up to 30 degrees. at work they say any pole with a side guy has to be tied on the side im an apprentice so i keep my place but ive had 3 or 4 instances now there im tieing in primary yes theres a side guy but the angle is so minute i have to do all i can to hold the **** phase on the side of the insulator. Any advice or insight on when and when not to use a side tie? Thank you for listening to my story haha

One simple thing to remember is the "glass" holds the conductor not the tie. If I'm understanding your post if you had to hold the conductor when you tied it then the tie is holding the wire not the insulator.

The ape part has you screwed. It is a do as I said position for you. Until you top out you have to go with the flow and put the good and bad things you were taught in your mental what to do and what not to do file.

Thank you sir for the reply thats pretty much what i thought. Gravity is the ultimate factor where ever the wire sits best is where it should go. I will hold that for my own knowledge because like u said till i top out i have to go with the flow Thanks again

Unfortunately, your post is dead on man.

Companys...supposidly have "Standards", but as you said, "The Insulator holds the conductor" not the Tie, and as an apprentice, Mr. TB250, probably should do as he's told.
Any dumba$s that would put a 30 degree conductor, on TOP of the insulator, is just stupid.

Of course we don't know the "tension on the conductor" when sayin this. But if it's as he discribes...it's stupid to top tie something like that.

I'm also assumin we're NOT talkin "Pre Formed Ties" here. If you're talkin Pre Formed Ties, on a 30 degree angle like that....that's a different ballgame, and probably Ok. Though, I still don't like it.

Guys have to get away from this new guy bull **** , the guy on the ground can't see how bad the corner is , respect is earned not given , your doing the work it should be your call, most people don't even guy right anymore, that's why poles are always coming over. Sucks being new but I was there, they should take your point of view into consideration

I have to agree with volcom this "new guy" c#*p just don't wash with me,I think you should open your mouth mate and stand up and be counted a a guy who has ability to question things that just don't feel or look right,I was told by my instructor to question everything that I didn't understand or didn't think was right, his theory was "everyday is a school day in line work, and those who think they know everything will always fall down".so open you mouth mate, and keep asking everybody you come across if they think it's right, what's the worst that can happen?

Back when I was an apprentice I was taught to ask questions and make suggestions, they would then explain to me why my ideas were good or bad. But really are you guys still using hand ties? We haven't had them in well over 20 years!!

I have been through a lot of states & for whatever reason the poly insulators with mechanical clamp is not real common even though they are faster, easier & safer live.

I worked in Connecticut, we used the plastic Hendrix insulators there, but when I was in Alabama on a storm they had the K-Line polymeric. Go figure

I wasnt meaning he should sit back and shut his mouth. Most apes are shown many different ways to do things, some good some not.

I always welcome an ape asking why do we do it that way it shows me he's paying attention and wants to learn.

I came up in the "Shut up and do it the way I told you" apprenticeship no matter what questions were asked. To this day I have not said that to an ape and will never say it, we are here to teach them.

Thanks for the replies guys! In my experience as an app its a very delicate line between speeking up and speaking back in some of my formans eyes anyway. Just frustratung when response after response is something like "thats not what i know so its wrong" type of thing. Sorry just had to b*tch a little bit:D haha Thanks again
