Anybody keep material/equipment in any substations, possibly a few transformers, bypasses, parts for pole top switches...in order to avoid going all the way back to a center /yard.....keeping the outage at a minimum.....its actually a good idea, but Ive seen it done-un-done-done and un-done,with many material handlers out there,I know some trucks that carry a 25kva overhead and a 50 kva at all times......did I miss anything.....ohh some might be one man trucks.

The only thing we store at the stations is 2 15kva and 2 25 kva pole type transformers. The trucks themselves carry a couple of spare cutouts, xarms, etc. If we know a storm is coming a lot of the guys will load a couple of transformers on thier truck before they leave the yard, and if they weren't used unload them later.

We don't own the substations, out G&T co-op does, they don't want a bunch of stuff lying around and noone accountable. We have talked about renting spots at vatious self-storage units on our system, but haven't done it yet.

We have talked about renting spots at vatious self-storage units on our system, but haven't done it yet.I've been told by a couple of power company reps that they don't store parts in subs because they don't want to pay inventory taxes and pay anyone to do the inventory every year. Screws them in the long run on old switches they have to change out instead of stealing a part off a takedown laying in the sub. Lot of time and money wasted over the years. It's why they don't keep spare towers laying around. One goes down in an ice storm-get it rush made new-who cares how much it costs?? If FEMA doesn't pay for it........someone will.
