I thought a power outage consisting of 3 million was major, but the one in India is affecting 600million,half of the people there, seems that two grids collapsed, the eastern and the northern, thay say due to an outdated infrastructure. One third of the households dont have electricity to even power a simple light bulb....Its 2012 isnt it?

I also thought about the same situation Poot, they have already said that our infrastructure is poor,or needs to be upgraded, the electric grids, the highways, the train systems. We are falling behind in lots of things,education.......guess the rich have their money, and to them that is more important....As a 20 yr old I saw trains in germany that would put ours to shame, even today, and that was back in 1981..so we are way behind, and its getting worse....like loodvig says, the miners being stuck under the ground, what else is really happening over there that we dont know about...all of that is a red flag...it could happen here in the future.

Too bad most of that falls in to the dont want to spend money and scar their profits area. We only fix infrastructure when it fails, thats sad. What happened to the america where people were proud of our country and we built things here at home with pride at the hands of skilled craftsmen and the country where we didnt want to be seen as second to anyone, we had pride, we cared. Now it seems like we care more about other country's issues than the ones at hand here at home. A tsunami hits a distant nation and there's an outcry for support, celebrities are there left and right trying to guilt us in to giving towards helping these nations recover from their tsunami, we have tornados rip towns to nothing but foundations we have hurricanes desimate areas and wild fires burn acres upon acres and where's the outcry for us to help our fellow man? I dont get it. Where did the downturn happen? Just something that floors me. Im only 26 and i guess its just a hope for us to be back where we used to be. Maybe i was just born in the wrong era

Lots of the greed started when they started paying professional players tons of money for playing sports, the Ceo's must have thought these people are stupid,we can do it also cause we earn our money, that was in the mid 80's,and as you know thay suceeded.Helping others in times of need hasnt hurt this country, but sending jobs to other countries when they are needed here is greed also, these companies were built here, all types of american people helped the companies suceed, then when they figure they got all the money that they can make here they pack to another country.

They're going to have to phase India back on in very small chunks. Their infrastructure was totally on the edge and now there's no way they'll be able to pick up a "waiting load" of compressors and transformers all just raring to go thanks to thermostat and other automatic demand.

I agree, it's going to be hard to pick up that kind of load! One wrong move and you'll loose what ya got and more!

ummmmmmmmmmm I am convinced thats its gonna take a similar occurence over here to bring it to the attention of most that we are wayyyyyyyyyy behind in updating our infrastructure. After all when its workin its just a given, but when it aint its a big deal. Just imagine having power available for one portion of each day, and being left without for the rest. The utilities all know thats a distinct possibility and have an emergency plan in place to ration power among their customers............ The customers however have no idea its even a possibility

What's the bet that when regions of America totally max-out on their distribution capacity, that they simply write new rules to allow even higher voltages to be used on common distribution poles. Quite possibly going in the direction of transmission voltages on wooden poles.
That should make the already huge number of public accidental contacts even more spectacular.
