Here are a few pic's of the "suicide poles" that are found throughout our system. Not very fun working on the secondaries while the transformers are energized. The primary is 12kv. (I apologize because the pictures are "sideways":D)

We use to have that crap when I hired in. We got rid of it shortly after that. Only seen it on single phase. I think they said it was for lighting protection not sure.

Good to see that you pulled it through, great photos,as ugly as it is,reminds me of some women I messed around with when I had one to many to drink when I was younger. Can you imagine waking up to something that ugly?

There is lots of old 4kv construction left around here, it'll get changed out eventually. I have worked around it my entire career. Have you ever seen boxed arm construction?

The only time I have seen the secondary above the tub like that was in places with clearance issues. Seems awfully hairy to work on. We have some real old construction with the box arms still being used on it, otherwise I usually just see it still hanging but abandoned.

It is very similiar to the old construction you would see in New Orleans.

We had a lot of three phase tubs hung lower than the secondary in an alleys for some businesses and work shops back years ago. One night on trouble I got a call to go to the inner city there was a large gray piece of electrical equipment in the alley. It was dark and after hours, I found the alley and my partner was heading over to see if I needed help. When I saw what was happening I couldn't stop laughing. One of the locals came home after a night out and backed his 1970 something pickup truck into a pole which had a 225 KVA three phase tr. This tub was one of those old blackish ones with the cooling fins on the outside and the bolted top. Well the bump from the truck broke the hanger loose and the tub crash into the back of that old truck and squashed it flat. Then the tub tipped over and tumbled out onto the alley. When I got there it was still glucking oil all over the alley. We couldn't do anything but call a crew. we needed a bunch of oil dry and a material handler to pick up the iron hulk. I still laugh with the image in my head.LOL

This is box construction in Toronto. I am glad I never worked on it.
