Anyone else have to read word for word back to the disppatchers when getting a urd switching order. On overhead its not done but on the urd switching orders it has to be done....as some of you know some can be tricky or long and some really simple.....depending on lots of factors including the dispatcher going 100 mph when giving you one.Once you get used to it ,its no big deal, but after being away you get a little rusty.Depending on every situation even the restore side can be long..... now most of the switching orders are given out by the computers, but not all the time.

Here it doesn't matter whether its OH or UG, either every crew has a written copy and you just say execute step 3 or whatever or you have to read every step and have it repeated back before you execute. Also every switching order has to been written by a Journeyman or above and checked by a Journeyman or above before starting.

Thats a new one on me,being checked by a Jy or above.Thats a good practice if you have the people available. There are some that cant give a switching order back the way its susposed to be given back, how and why is beyond me,but its out there.

Reading switching orders back word for word is a good habit and helps cut down on mistakes.

All switching is read back word for word. After switching is received it is read back. After it is completed the switchman reads back what was done and the operator will read it back word for word. Switching mistakes kill. Clearances are issued and read back word for word, and the time issued noted. When a clearance is given up it is again repated back word for word.

You got it brother, here a clearance can only be released by the person that recieved it, with only a couple of exceptions.

All of our switching orders are made up by operators & checked by a second operator, in the rare event that there is not a second operator it is checked by a second competent person. All switching should be repeated back to the operator as well as signed with a time & any tags noted. At the end the copy returned as it is a legal document.

It depends who you work for here. One of the larger utilities require you to read off every step of a switching order. But to get one you have to apply to operations for it, then it is made up by one operator and checked by another, then if you are smart you will double check it yourself. I have found huge mistakes in them. Now the smaller and more rural utilities will allow a lineman to make up a switching order, and depending, on how many item are involved it might have to be checked by another lineman.
