linelady somehow made me think of this one ,so dont blame me,ok...ok....ever thought of anothers point of view towards lineman? Well I havent really and could care a less...but...what if your spouse also was in this trade doing the same thing as you do.Could you handle being married to a lineman, even if it was a woman.Lets look at what you would be facing,or what she also would be facing .
1. what if both of you worked different shifts
2.what would the holidays be like? If one of you were off,the other might have to work.
3.would you be working at the same location
4.callouts,you might be in the middle of something at night:D,and she or he goes to work?
5.overtime,what if your spouse made more? way more.
6.and finally what if one spouse was union and the other non-union

can you come up with anything else to make this a better nightmare:nightmare:

Why do gingers creep you out????

I fully expect to get push back from the field. That is part of why I have chosen to get the line degree. So when I get the push back "why should I listen to you, you have never even been up a pole" I can say yes I can. Let me get my size 4 kids line boots out of the truck and show you how it should be done. lol! no but really. Being a a little woman in a mans field I do expect push back. however my heart is truely in the safety of the line department. I have seen and heard of too many deaths/injuries and want to some way work to a safer enviroment for our guys/gals.

It was a long story that included a disgruntelled POOT... He didn't apreciate my "quiz" picture that everyone thought was a piece of line equipment BUT was actually a banana hannger.

So I every post after that I put up I was asked ... " Is it a banana hanger.

So while working on "Jura" last year. Refurbishing a 33 kv line. I made poot his own special banana holder.......

Linelady, just remember us linedogs love a good joke. Your biggest challenge will be some of the old timers. I had it happen to me once when I was a young journeyman. The story goes like this, me and this old timer ( 30 year man) were out tapping on new underground services. This utility ran a 4/0 copper buss underground and 't' tapped the services. As I got ready to hook up a service he went into a padmount transformer and pulled out the dry well canister fuse. When I was finished, he closed in the same dry well canister fuse to liven the secondary back up. " Hey hold on you can't operate those dry well fuses " I say, " Its been a banned practice for 15 years. He replies "I have been doing it for 30 years with no problems" . To make a long story short , the utility would not acknowledge the issue until after I brought in the safety association. Then I was on the s*** list for a long time. I only worked there about 3 and a half years.

Ummmmm us old guys aint as bad as ya mite thank. But ya hafta have a better reason than kause I sed so if ya want any co-operation frum us. We wanna know exactly why a rule is being implemented and why its necessary. Every one of us has prolly seen it work jus fine in the past,( example now a bucksqueeze is mandatory) Every one of us knows that our brains and abilities to solve prollems is what got us this far along......... Not a book full of rules. Are there good rules? yessir but theres also plenty that have never been justified and are there for no other reason than to fend off lawsuits and even some that diminish the future skill sets of the younger guys.

Do you kinda see who your dealing with on this site,at least Bren has admitted taking that fruit up a pole....who knows what others have done ,including me...in my younger years I used to carry a butcher knife on my belt,it came in handy,I just forgot what for.

I absolutely agree! There are alot of rules for "safety" that make absolutely no sense, some lawyer made it up and so it is written in a manual somewhere. But there are alot that just flat aren't being followed because it takes too long, is uncomfortable, or "we have never done it that way before" . These are the ones that HAVE to be changed. We need to sit down as an industry and think about how our families would feel if that knock is placed upon the door telling them that we aren't coming home. We aren't coming home because we chose to not use safety rule, we chose to cut a corner to make it quicker. In turn we chose not to come home that night and maybe never again. I sat down and wrote that letter to my family. My husband, my children, my folks. "I am not coming home because I chose not to wear my saftey harness and now I am sorry that they must plan my funeral".

I understand I don't think the same way others do because of my thought process in safety, however I have been on both sides of this coin. I have been the child sitting at home wondering if dad is coming home, worrying if he is safe, or if mom will get the call this time on storm duty. And now I am the person learning the trade and having a family depending, waiting and worrying. So to me, If it keeps me safe why question why? NO matter the reason coming home safe is the ultimate goal no matter the road that I take to get there.

My 2 cents take it or leave it. :D

Please don't take me the wrong way, the old fellas taught me some excellant tricks and procedures on how to get work done, even the fine art of throwing dirt in a pole hole from a dump truck without making a mess. I have also worked with fellas that just do it thhe same as always. I have found that attitude can sometimes get you into trouble. I worked with one old fella, nearly 70, that had run a large travelling crew for a major utility for many years, he told me he liked that I thought outside the box. He was an old school foreman that liked to work and knew how to get 'er done. I have also worked with guys that thinke they know it all ( me scared). These are the fellas you will have the most trouble bringing their attitudes around. Most of this group are older and very set in their ways, with some very bad habits, there are some younger ones too. I had one 4th year that was like that. good luck linelady, if you manage to save one man frominjury or death , you'll have won the battle!!!
