measuring a tie

What method do you use when you have a bank that has a tie,such as an closed delta bank,do you actually measure them or how do you make sure its the proper length?I use my arms,a arm-lenght and a half or an arm-lenght and 3/4......Im sure some will measure all of the ties by tape or rope?
