Where I am in Essex the "grid" crosses the A12 on it's merry way between Rayleigh and Braintree NG sites.
Many times as I've travelled the A12, I've been caught in traffic as motorists have slowed to watch the sky chariots work their way across the wires.

Bet ya I know the guys up there,, all the grid linesmen down that way are based in Northfleet, in
Kent .. And there's two down in Ninfield ( Hastings )
I spent 15 years with them.... I still keep in touch with a few of them...
All motorised spacer chairs now ( we never called them " chariots " )

I don't know any of the grid linesman, know plenty of the UKPN lads though. One of the wife's friends used to work at Rayleigh and her husband is still with the grid but something fairly senior to do with trees ??
The grid are painting structures at the moment in my part of the world which must be like the forth bridge. I can't think of anything worse than getting covered in that sticky resin based paint every day.

That's why they tender that job out.... 99% of all towers painted in the uk are painted by the
Polish gangs that come over for the summer...
It used to be a few Welsh gangs that did it... But the Polish under cut everyone..

And by everyone Bren means EVERYONE. That was one of three things that happened in the UK when it got involved in "Europe".
1. Cheap labour undercutting British trades dramatically.
2. An influx of organised immigrant crime.
3. A massive quantity of our cash being handed over to "Europe" for nothing positive in return.
People rant about how wonderful the Polish workers are, but in reality the only thing they're ranting about is the price because it's so cheap. The Polish can be cheaper because they don't live in an expensive economy, and because they don't bother with such inconveniences as trade standards and certification.
To help the immigrants take our electrical jobs, we even had to change our wiring colour codes to match theirs. Then we were forced to "re-certify" in the new colours at great expense.
At some point there's going to be a violent backlash at the looters that call themselves the "government". I think that day will be with us soon.
