    Default Is it ok?

    Featured Sponsor

Lets say that you have an order to set a meter, well next door is another meter base that is ready also, but you dont have an order to set that meter.......since you will be inside the same transformer is it ok to hook the other one up and leave it booted out since their is a good chance that you will be getting it the next day or two,,,or your fellow lineman will be getting a freebie....I know this is a gray area.....but is it done where you are located?Saying all of that, here it is common to have a meter turned down due to no panel on the breaker box....exposed wires....thas all up to the lineman....there again, you will just be right back the next day or two.How do you do it or how do they want it done?

They never really complained here....that is until the later years, when common sense was being pushed out of the trade. Now the same can be said with a temp-service,they once could be removed if the new home was hooked up and had wall sockets/ready to go.....That changed too when common sense was thrown out....now you needed an order even though the temp was not going to be used anymore.......well there is a way around that......If the builder wanted it removed bad enough, ole reppy would remove the temp.....saying it was on the ground due to a tractor......hazardous conditions....nothing more said,so Id get two orders instead of one. Nothing ever said

    Default Simple question

Lets say your sent to install a meter, this happens to be a 3 phase meter, lets just say 277/480....everything checks out but the rotation is backwards @ the line-side meter jaws. This address happens to be 25 miles away.Do you make the corrections needed?Do you turn it down and let the electrican do that? And finally if you have him do it and wind up going back and its still wrong or not corrected, what do you do?

On a new service they have to match us, but we always try to give them clockwise rotation , on the old we hook it back up just like we found it.

We have a meter department. They wire all the three phase meters to the current transformers.

Like Org said we would heat it up mark rotation and let the electrician match it up inside. On a 277/480 or 120/208 we need to be sure which of the four leads is the neutral, they mark them with tape, but that has been known to be wrong a time or two so we check for sure. we would correct if needed on site.

On old service where we would replace wire or even a tub, we would match voltage and rotation to what they had originally at the open breaker, going off the information we wrote on the tub door when we first energized the unit brand new however many years ago.

The meter just collects usage but can be disconnected from the CT's and the power is still going to the main breaker on three phase set.

    Default Meter testing and rotation

Use an older analog meter to make the grounds test. A digital meter is too sensitive. It will read the resistance in the wire and show it as the "ghost" voltage. An analog will not.
Do all the tests; proper voltage, grounds, and shorts. A test for backfeed is wise as is testing the tester after all the tests are done. It's not unusual for grounds to be found, but while shorts are unusual, they happen now and then.

As for rotation, we also hook it up, mark rotation in the meter cabinet and let the electrician match it.
Marking rotation will be a huge help if the service is damaged and interrupted. The repair crew can return it to the original if it's marked.
