  1. Default Arc Demonstration Trailer

We are wanting to upgrade our arc demo equipment. Currently, we have a transformer and capacitor that sit on rubber blankets that look nothing like a powerline. Our construction center would like to put on at least 2 arc demonstrations a year at local schools and we want an arc demo trailer with 3 poles consisting of a step up transformer, single phase recloser, and stepdown transformer. We want something that looks like a miniature version of what is really out there so the kids will get a better visual understanding of what we are showing them. Our management would really prefer if we could find a place that builds the trailer ready to go so they can just write a check for it. Does anyone know of any companies out there that could build a trailer for us? I suspect we are going to have to build it ourselves so if anyone has some good pictures and/or video of their unit, that would help a lot. We were also wanting the unit to be self powered and hoping that a top model Honda generator would be powerful enough to run it and quiet enough to not interfere with the demo. One of the biggest problems we currently have with our set up is finding a place we can tap into the school's power close enough to where they want us to do the demo. All help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Theres nothing like the real thing,Id like to see a company have a set up where the school /classes come to you.Like a portion of a real 3 phase circuit where a branch can fall across it and they can see and hear the sound that we all know.If possible have them sitting in stands where they even can feel the heat. Photos dont always show whats really happening, vids are ok but still not close to what Im talking about.Anyway good luck.

Yeah, the tree branch is another reason we want to upgrade. There will be a single phase circuit running between the 3 poles so there will be a hot phase and neutral. During a demo, we can grab a branch with a shotgun and stick it between the phase and neutral and light it up. If we are demo'ing to a more advanced group like TXDOT or a fire department, we can show them how the recloser will cycle and attempt to let the fault clear itself.

I saw this one a while ago and thought they did a pretty good job. This is Dominion giving a demo the fire department.

Most of them that I have seen are nothing more than a backfed overhead transformer.

When I had ours built, I worked with the Electrical Occupations and the Welding students at our local Career Tech Center at the Intermediate School District. We used a 16 ft flatbed trailer to build it on. The unit folds down into racks made by the welding students to create a or profile when driving down the road.

Note to self, just because it pops into my head doesn't mean it should come out of my mouth.
