Default hendrix Cable- Install without a Bucket?

    Featured Sponsor

Does anybody install Hendix aerial cable without using a bucket? If so, how do you attach the cable to the spacers along the spans between the poles?
The idea of a boatswain's chair came up. That posed the problem of rescuing the worker when he is in the middle of the span and the other workers cannot reach him from the pole.
How do you install the spacers without a bucket? Do have any rescue methods to retrieve a worker in a boatswain's chair who cannot be reached from the pole?
Thanks for sharing any experience or knowledge you have.

We install our Hendrix cable without the messenger and spacers due to when trees fall on the 7#8 alumaweld messenger that it would break poles and cause our outages to be much longer. I have heard of people using a type of spacer buggy that could be pulled along by people on the ground by means of a rope. Perhaps this would enable a rescue since the ground crew could pull the buggy along to the next pole.

    Default hendrix cable

    Rat,
Thanks. poles breaking is a problem. That mesenger will take down a whole lead of wooden poles. The messenger or pole attechments should be made to break before the pole does. What do use for the system neutral if you don't put in the messenger? Do sag the cable like regular wire and tie them in like regular wire?

Many years ago before we had the amount of bucket trucks we have today, we would run the messenger in then install the 3 shieve rollers from a bosuns chair. Same deal when clipping in, used a bosuns chair rigged with rollers that rode on the messenger. man on the ground pulled you and you took down the rollers and installed the spacers. A real PIA if you got in the chair wrong, course the first time you did it no one told you that you got in it backwards.....a real ***** gettin on the next pole. Havent used on in **** near 35 years, havent seen one in 35 years for that matter.......

So are you building spaced aerial? We have been using Hendrix in heavily treed areas for years ,but built in a normal configuration. We have done some on x-arms , armless, and double circuit armless.

We frame Hendrix aerial cable just like bare conductor and pull a neutral in underneath it, like RB101 said we got tired of trees falling on the 7number8's alumoweld static and breaking off poles, we also went to Penta treated poles in alleys ( much better to climb than green CCA poles). Since we went to conventional framing methods we have had no more broke poles.

The bosuns chair is the way to go. Not too bad if your a skinny guy or have a stout upper body
to pull yourself along. We would always have the handline attached to the chair to send up spacers and as a mode of egress. Had a figure 8 just like for self bucket rescue. Never seen it used or practiced but I'm sure you could figure out something in a pinch. Hendrix is a breeze to install but a ***** to put back up.
