JOB NOTICE

 

Lineman

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this position maintains, repairs, and installs Moorhead Public Service’s (MPS’) electric distribution and transmission systems; works with or on energized conductors of all voltages; responds to electric outages; performs streetlight and traffic signal maintenance and installation; and ensures that power is supplied to all internal and external customers without disruption.

 

JOB DUTIES OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintains, repairs, and installs MPS’ electric distribution and transmission systems.
  • Works with or on energized conductors of all voltages in accordance with prescribed company methods.
  • Responds to electric outages.
  • Performs streetlight and traffic signal maintenance and installation.
  • Attends and participates in job safety and training programs.
  • Keeps alert at all times to observe and report or correct any unsafe or unsatisfactory system condition.
  • Performs material handling.
  • Follows established line switching and clearance procedures.
  • Assists in locating underground electric, water, and fiber infrastructure.
  • Locates underground electric faults.
  • Assists other MPS crews as needed and in emergencies.
  • Attends and participates in job safety and training programs.
  • Participates in standby duty rotation.
  • Responds to, and performs, a fair share of required overtime.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience, and training required.

 

Education

Graduate of a one-year electric lineworker program at a vocational or technical school.

Experience

Three (3) years of lineworker experience.

Trainings, Certificates, Licenses, and Other Requirements

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License valid in the state of Minnesota.
  • Reside within a 20-minute drive time of MPS’ Dispatch/Operations Center in order to comply with policies related to standby duty rotation.
  • Personal qualities consistent with MPS’ Culture Values – be positive, be appreciative of others, be respectful, be a team player, and be engaged.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience, and training preferred in order to exceptionally perform all of the functions of this position.

 

Education

Graduate of a two-year electric lineworker program at a vocational or technical school.

 

Experience

Five (5) years of lineworker experience.

Trainings, Certificates, and Licenses

Certified as a journeyman lineworker.

 

COMPLEXITY

While performing the normal duties of this job, there are related steps, processes, and methods that require this position to recognize clear differences in a variety of situations.

 

RESPONSIBILITY

Supervision

General supervision is provided while performing the normal duties of this job.

This position exhibits no formal supervisory responsibilities but may coordinate work with other individuals as a team member.

 

Impact

While performing the normal duties of this job, this position’s work affects the overall efficiency and image of MPS.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, this position:

  • May occasionally crawl, sit, finger or keystroke, and smell; frequently climb stairs, bend/stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach above shoulder level, walk, push or pull 100 lbs., lift 100 lbs., carry 100 lbs., feel, talk, and use repetitive motions; and continuously balance, stand, hear, and drive.
  • Will use close vision, far vision, depth perception, visual acuteness, color vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Will use their right hand and left hand for simple handling or grasping, firm handling or grasping, and fine handling or manipulation.
  • Will use their right foot and left foot for repetitive motions.

 

Work Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, this position will experience exposure to exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions; exposure to noise, dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, or oils requiring special mitigating precautions or protective gear; works with high voltage; work around moving mechanical parts; work in close quarters; exposure to extreme heat and extreme cold; and work at unguarded heights.

WAGE AND APPLICATION INFORMATION:

The 2021 wage is $28.02 to $46.77 per hour. This position is represented by IBEW – union wages and benefits apply.
