The City of Geneva Municipal Electric Utility is currently seeking a qualified journeyman lineman to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, testing, trouble shooting and inspection of the City’s electric (12-34kV) utility system. To qualify, applicants must have obtained a journey level certification from a recognized apprenticeship program. Primary job responsibilities include the construction and maintenance of city overhead and underground distribution systems, fiber optic splicing, operation and maintenance of substation and generation equipment, and rotating on-call responsibilities.
Applicants should have knowledge of methods & procedures required in the maintenance/construction of electric utility systems, including: proper use of tools & equipment; related hazards & safety precautions; and applicable codes & standards governing construction/maintenance of overhead & underground electric distribution systems. They will be able to safety and efficiently install, maintain, and repair components of the electric utility system; isolate and correct electrical system faults, breaks & cuts; work safely with high voltage overhead & underground power cables, transformers & related electric utility facilities & equipment; operate a backhoe, bucket/boom truck; maintain and care for assigned tools and equipment; read, understand, and interpret engineering plans and specifications; deal firmly, tactfully, and professionally with supervisors, contractors, engineers, and property owners; communicate effectively; and be able to use a computer to enter, extract and query data. Reliable attendance, punctuality and availability are essential to the position.
Physical requirements include the ability to perform moderately demanding physical work, such as: lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Push/pull supply carts or equipment, deal with hazardous materials, and to work in uncomfortable areas due to dirt, drafts, fumes, noise, lighting, or temperature variation. Must be able to perform duties requiring extreme precaution to avoid injury, and to raise, climb and work from the ground without the fear of heights. Must be capable of distinguishing primary colors.
Applicants must have or be able to obtain a State of Illinois Class A CDL driver’s license within 30 days of hire. Starting salary is $51.2442 hourly for a journeyman lineman.
