In the cold and weather darkness
The storm had not yet passed
A roar of power above it all
With a yellow beacon flashed

A burley man with weary eyes
Knocked softly on my door
Said “We’ll have you on in a little bit”
With a smile went in the storm

They worked like it’s another day
Seldom time to look around
They dressed the pole with bolts and wire
And set it in the ground

The thunder made me jump each time
And the lightning filled the air
The gladiators of the line
Worked on without a care

They climbed the poles and pulled up wire
With power and with grace,
and when the lights were on again
with satisfaction on their face

I said, I guess your going home now
You’ve been out a good long time
They said we can’t, there’s still lights out
There’s darkness on our lines

They retreated to the darkness
Leaving comfort far behind
Driving off with a beam of light
Shining out there on the lines

I started feeling selfish
For what these men had done for me.
They brought a stranger comfort
They left their home and family

Beneath the shadow of our flag
And held in high regard
Our service men and ladies fight
To keep us free from harm

Policemen catch the bad guys
Fireman save the day
And all those folks are heroes
In there own special way

But I still can’t help but think about
Those burley lineman friends
That’ll risk it all for a stranger
To get current on again

Now as far as high regard
I don’t know how you’d rate
But we think linemen are heroes here,
across the bluegrass state.
