What's In A Name?
By: Tom Harrell

When to this venture I first came
Too little thought I gave its name.
Time and work through which I'd go
Unveiled the meaning of it, though.

I believed - at the start -
Its name was rendered from the part
Where current flows through tensioned wires
Held up high by poles and towers.

Then 'nother thought to me occurred
Of how its name was really earned
It could've come from their demands
That men respond to their commands,
It could've come from holding sway
O'er lives of men who work for pay.

The pagers hung on belted hips
Tether men like mooring ships.
Phone lines give our necks a jerk
When calls go out for men to work,
The bosses call and men respond
To keep the system up and on.
So, day or night, rain or snow,
When ere' they call the men will go.

Yes, time and work through which I've been
Unveiled the meaning of their name -
It's not from lines, poles or towers
That carry megawatts of power.
But their demand for constant toil
>From linemen 'neath or above the soil.
The name derives from their desire
For men to work and never tire.
In our compliance we agree -
They are the Power Company!
