A Simple Climb

It was a simple climb. We were pulling poles that were replaced with a newly built underground line. All that needed to be done was climb up at about the 25 foot level and sling the pole for the linetruck. There were already about 20-30 poles already pulled, so the job got repetitious. This is were I have the most regret. While climbing, I hit a loose knot and burned the pole. I landed on a tree root sticking out of the ground with my tailbone taking the direct impact. 5 years later... I'm in constant pain from two fractured vertebrae and advanced signs of arthritis in my SI joints (hips). Because the vertebrae were in my mid-back, I can't lift my arms over my head for more than 2 minutes without out them collapsing. I'm 29 years old and my 10 year career may have just came to a very quick end because the job got repetitious and I decided not to use proper climbing techniques. We learn from our mistakes; unfortunetly this is one that I will pay for for the rest of my life. I'm lucky to have only been forced out of a job that I love and respect.

It only takes one mistake, guys. Don't get sloppy with your job, no matter how repetitious or easy you may think it is.
